He does still sound young. We got our puppy at about 13 weeks and it took 2-3 weeks to train him. We didn't use paper but took him out all the time. First thing in the morning, after eating, after playing, after any excitement (new people etc) and then evry 20-30 mins regardless. It is exhausting but you will get there eventually. The poos are the most disheartening because they really do stink your house out!
Keep perservering - it's quicker than potty training children ime.

We left our pups out from early morn
We put the dog cage and used to to prop the door so pup could step right outside and ahve little chocie aside from soiling his bed or going outside
At night we took him out every 10 minutes and brought him back in as soon as he had done it and praised himAlso do not fee them after 4pm take up water at 6pm
We confine ours inside the crate (door closed) all night from 10pm - 7am

they have been clean since 10 weeks.
Ours are Jack Russells and I would say they twigged very fast. I have had other breeds that have been really thick about it

and we never let them anywhere except the kitchen until they were trained
They've never had the chance to pee on the carpet!

If we leave him in his crate he will just do it in there too.I thought they wouldn't do that.He goe in there from 11pm to 7am and still does it. Read in book that it is not fair to make him wee in crate so I have left the door open for him.Piffle would you suggst locking him in again maybe?

We are open plan down stairs but doo have wooden floors. I really don't mind clearing but don't want him to carry on doing it.I clean it with the stuff that puts dogs off from doing it there again too

With our pup we made cage half paper and half easy wash petbed.
He still pissed and shat all over the cage
If we left the door open it was all over the kitchen
Once we locked him in it has been fine
BUT
you can only reasonably expect a pup to go that long if they have not had food or water for a while beforehand
What breed is your dog sizewise?I was really gung ho and strict and I was in early pregnancy and had to have it sorted!

He is a very cute miniature schnauzer.I have been feeding him at 7pm too after we have eaten because I read that they need to be feed after the family.I feel like i have a newborn and am doing it all wrong.I will feed him about 4pm now as this suits me better anyway

it does feel mean, you could try bringing it back one hour a day
He sounds very cute
We do not feed our dogs with us - they eat outside and pretty much stay outside until dd is in bed 7-8pm. Then they come into the living room with us, they chew stuff so we have to be in there at teh same time
now older (6 mths )they get fed at 10am and 5.30 -6pm

How big is the cage?? If its too big they don't just see it as their bed but as a bed and toilet. We had a small cage until ours were 6 months then got a bigger one

Bananaknickers · 16/09/2006 00:04

Hi it is a cage for his size when fully grown which is a small size dog. So its not to big for him and has a fleece blanket inside with a few toys

Cupcakes has it right. Effort in = benefits out.

If you want pup to house train quickly it will be time consuming initially - you really do have to take them out:

*after a sleep and on waking
*after a meal
*after playing
*after any excitement

and if none of those apply then around half hourly....

The good news is that once they twig that you only want them to go on the grass outside they will learn to hold it in for longer until they get the opportunity to go out

mummymic · 19/09/2006 22:40

hi - when your puppy does a wee, or a poo outside use a command eg wee wee and give them a treat - if you can manage to do this continuously (time consuming i know) but after a while you can get them to do it on command - my dad said i looked like a fish wife in my dressing gown in a morning saying do wee wees do wee wees! but she used to do it! also put dog out immediately after eating, and dont leave food down if they dont eat it all (this means they will learn meal times and poo times!) i remember my dog crying to go out for a wee, my dad opened the door - but it was raining so she ran back in and weed on the floor!!! at least she knew she wanted to go!! lol good luck

HyacinthB · 22/09/2006 22:52

Our dog trainer told us to use the command 'be quick' - less embarrassing that saying wee wee or poo poo, lol
