Cats marking their territory indoors

My cat keeps spraying by the catflap. Not pleasant, certainly don't tell any visitors but I know the spot and clean it up each day.

Today he sprayed somewhere else in the house. Something has to be done, I have a young baby crawling around.

Does anyone has any advice?

He's 13 years old and I've had him since a kitten.

Many thanks,
meid

dont know how to stop the spraying other sprinkling your husbands pee about. but its unlikely that whatever cleaning solution you are using is removing all the odour. there are special cleaning products that are designed to completely remove the odor from the cats spray, even though it probably smells to you as if it has gone. cats have a sensitive sense of smell and can often still detect where they have been unless you use the right stuff. we go some stuff from a pet store years ago, a pet pee carpet shampoo/ household cleaner and one the animals it would remove the odor of was skunk!! guess it was american.

Are you sure it is him Meid? Not a visitor trying to take his territory?
I only ask as ti is near the catflap-even if it is him-this may well be the reason for suddenly starting at such a ripe old age.

Agree with Magig-definitely get "professional" cleaning stuff to get rid of any lingering odours.

I'd maybe take him to the vet - could be a sign of a kidney etc problem? Particularly at his age.

And otherwise, yeah, buy the specialist products, I think the pet stores stock them? We had a kitten who liked to pee in the bathroom (carpeted floor, lovely), and the special products cleaned up the smell so it stopped smelling like the right place to pee, iyswim.

Could another cat have come in through the catflap recently ? We have always had cats (neutered males) and the only time they sprayed was when other cats got into the house

Agree with everything said so far - if you don't have the specialist product, and it's a hard surface, clean well with biological washing powder, then wipe with surgical spirit. That gets rid of the smell completely

It's quite likely that he's being harrassed by other cats. My very weedy and ancient cat suffered from this (and ended up spraying, despite being a girl!). Other things that helped were getting a magnetic-entry cat flap, so that he's the only cat that can get in, and also stuff called Feliway, which your vet will have. It's basically artificial cat pheromones, and will make him feel more relaxed - you can get it either as a spray to put on the places where he has been spraying, or a kind of air freshener.

Oh, and my cat, despite being at least 14 when this all started, did give up spraying indoors and lived to the age of 18...

the vet told me my kitten needs his balls off in 6 weeks time, does that help stop them spraying?

sorry for hijack

Cassoulet · 12/09/2006 23:24

Meid, I would take him to the vet or at least phone for a chat about it. IME vet's surgeries are always quite happy to advise over the phone - I just phoned ours this morning re fleas and they talked to me for about 10 minutes. They'll probably want to see him. Good luck.

Lou33, yes it does and it also stops them straying so far or for so long. Don't worry, he'll be fine.

He may be spraying because he's stressed. My female has given herself cystitis due to being bullied by her brother ! She started to pee in all sorts of places, I scrubbed with bio washing powder and soap, then sprinkled vinegar on the spots ( no, the place doesn't smell like a fish and chip shop !)Then I got herbal stuff for her cystitis (works on humans too by the way) and got a Feliway diffuser. It is a cat pherenome thingy that has worked a treat in calming them both down - no more peeing !
