Barking bl**dy mad!! - experienced dog owners help me please

Our young excitable and much loved terrier barks all the time when in the garden. She barks at neighbours through the hedge, the wind blowing, people walking past, even at the rain if it is dripping loudly. As we've got elderly neighbours on one side and young children on the other I am paranoid about keeping her quiet but am failing completely. She gets 2 walks a day and lots of fun and games. She is not barking from fear or boredom - she just likes barking.

Has anyone tried those collars that squirt spray when the dog barks? What's the verdict? I don't like the idea of the electric shocky ones but am getting desperate enough to consider. I'm fairly sure a 'sonic bleep' collar would not really ruffle her feathers enough to make any difference at all. Heeeeeelp

The collars with the shock ect just scare the hell out of them

Water from a pistol might work but you would need to be hidden so she doesn't realise its coming from you and then the minute she stops give her a treat and reward her.

yes, I'd thought of a water pistol but I think it would be fairly obvious to the dog that it was me hiding behind the rose bush and would turn in to a funny -you can't catch me woof woof sort of game! That's why I wondered about the ones that squirt spray automatically

What do you do at the moment when she barks?

magnolia1 · 31/08/2006 13:25

The collar would be fine but the dog would need to be rewarded for stopping barking so you would still have to be around for a while at 1st.

thanks for the super speedy answers btw!

At the moment what I've been doing is a big NO! from me when she starts to bark and taking her inside if she continues (plus praise when she quietens). On nice days we like to leave the door open so she can pootle in and out but problem is that I cannot be there with her in the garden at all points of the day so I can't always give her instant feedback.
