The perfect cat has started cra**ing in our bathroom.

We never intended to have a cat but 4 years ago our beautiful shorthaired very pretty blue cat turned up pregnant in our back garden. No chip, placed found ads everywhere but no one claimed her. Anyway she stayed. She has been great - no hassle at all until a week ago. She had an upset stomach and 2 mornings in a row she poohed in the bath, forgave her as thought that was actually quite clever. Sadly she keeps doing it. I've left a little water in the bath to disuade her and today I've discovered she has peed behind the door and also downstairs in a corner of kitchen. Hate smell of cat pee. What can I do to a) stop her peeing and b) get rid of cat smell?

There is some stuff called Simple Solution that you can get from pet shops.(I got mine from Pets at Home). It magics smells away and so discourages repeat soiling in the same spot. Its very good ast getting rid of that foul amonia whiffand cheap enough too.

Has the cat had an upset recently? That can sometimes make them change their habits. My mums old cat started to mess inside when a new cat moved in locally and was terrorising the neighbourhood.

there's no such thing as a 'perfect' cat (or dog) they're both just sh*t machines

southeastastra · 31/08/2006 19:23

wow you can train a cat to use the toilet

MrsApronstrings · 31/08/2006 19:26

biological washing powder will get rid of the smell

Cod,that cat didn't flush! Kept bathroom door shut last night and she doesn't seem to have peed anywhere else. She's suddenly got quite fat too she's always been pretty sleek. Think I'll take her to the vets, only fat on one side of her belly, can't feel anything abnormal but she might have a cyst or something.

AAARRGGHH I take it all back, sodding cat, I've been sitting here typing thinking phew, must change that baby, switched lamp on and there is a pile of cat shit in the corner of the study!! What would make her suddenly start doing this?

Oh dear - definitely take her to the vet as there might be something physical, but as Pamina says, it might also be another cat terrorising her (my - female - cat sprayed when that happened)

Definitely get a litter tray for the moment, and then you need to clean up each area really thoroughly to make sure that it still doesn't smell to her like a litter place. So, clean with biological washing powder or spray, and then if you can wipe down with surgical spirit.

If she is being bullied/stressed, then Feliway helps - it's basically relaxing cat hormones, in a spray or an air freshener type dispenser, you get it from the vets.

Do hope she's OK!

We had an animal behavriourist on our show this morning talking about cats weeing and crapping in protest when their owners have babies.

Our usually genial puddy-tats did quite a bit of crapping after DD arrived and they realised they'd slipped down the pecking order. We mentioned it to the vet when one of them was due for his vaccinations and his advice worked. Wash the soiled article (easy in our case as it was a bathmat), spray with something with a name like Enzyme-out (sorry to be vague - try a pet shop). The idea is that the enzymes "eat" the residual odour thereby removing any traces that might encourage the cat to poo there again. Then we sprayed the mat with Feliway which is made of synthetic female cat pheremones and is supposed to calm them down. The enzyme spray was about a fiver, the Feliway is more expensive but you can also use it to discourage scratching. It's odourless, colourless and doesn't stain..... and it worked. We have had no repeat performances.
