Considering the idea of finding a new home for one of my dogs...

She is a lovely little thing, the sweetest dog over the planet, she is house trained (although can't hold for long), walks perfectly on the lead and as long as you don't allow her to sleep on the furniture she will respect you and your home.

Problem is she is almost as allergic as DS (you would think I'm hypochondriac but it's true, even the dog is allergic in my household!). She can not have chicken, lamb or carrots and gets sick for a week if she have them. A bit of turkey brings her to her knees, can not even sit for a day .

She is good with DS, but she gets very nervous around children. And needs lots of cuddles that I can not provide anymore or in the quantity she needs them since I got back to work. So... I'm sure she will be better with another owner who had more free time on their hands, an elderly person would be ideal as she is not a great walker either.

So the question is... where do I find this lovely elderly woman who can provide safe food for her and lots of cuddles?

No, now seriously, the question is how do you go about rehoming a dog, finding her a nice new owner without fearing she will be worse at some other place?

Is she any particular breed? Some breed organisations have a rescue charity that will rehome dogs.
If not you could phone the dog rescue centres close to you and explain that you need to rehome the dog but don't want the dog to go to kennels before being rehomed iyswim.

Yep, she is a very desirable breed which is as popular as mishandled... she is a rescue dog, I take from her irrational fear to children and how destructive she was when we first got it 7 years ago that she didn't have a great time.

I'm not sure the local rescue centre would take her, they are normally overcrowded with dogs. The idea of letting them know I don't want her to go to kennels is a good one, she can't cope with them, last time we took her to the kennels she was so distressed that as soon as she realised where we were she whinned and pee on her basket, and then went into a hunger strike.

That's why I am so worried... she is such a delicate thing.

If you look in the back of a dog magazine they have a list of rescue charities for specific breeds.Might be worth a peek in the newsagents to get the number,or the local animal rescue will have the number,or the vets.
I have thought about rehoming our dog as ds is allergis and his asthma was getting worse, but thankfully he has improved a lot .

Ggirl, I found a product that helps to keep the pet dander under control, is called Petal Cleanse. I got it from AllergyBestBuys.co.uk., the reviews are very good. DS is allergic to dogs but he has developed tolerance to ours (I have even found him sleeping on their bed and he is fine ), so I don't use it anymore. I have a new bottle, if you want it I can post it to you.

What breed is she? Often, there are rescue homes for particular breeds.

brimfull · 15/08/2006 00:03

I got some of that from the vets a few yrs ago chandra .I didn't find it that helpful,She's a very hairy beardie ,although we keep her trimmed now. Thanks for the offer though. The dog is great now and knows not to lick or go into the bedrooms.

Chandra · 15/08/2006 00:04

Pedigree yorkie, not register with the Kennel Club though. And although a yorkie she is not a barking dog, she has a lovely nature. Couldn't be cuter if she wanted too. It's not strange for people to start cooing at her after having her on their knees for a few minutes

Contact the breed society - must be someone who can help.

Chandra · 15/08/2006 00:05

I'm off to google for it.

Have found the breed rescue centre, and also that the dog trust have a section for dogs with special needs, may fit the bill considering her allergies...

Should I keep it? Should I let her go? should I keep it? Should I.....

Chandra,

Also give dogpages.com a go. There are loads of rescues on there that can help and many people willing to do home checks.

Chandra
A sort of ex friend of mine had a Yorkie and it went to a home in Sheffield.
There is a lady there that looks after Yorkies while their owners are away and re-homes them too.
My ex-friend took her Yorkie there just for a couple of holidays and eventually she just didn't have the time to look after him or give him the cuddles he wanted. This lady took him in with open arms and he's actually become a daddy now

I could try and find the number or some details for you if you like?

If this was a couple of months back, I could could have guarenteed a home for her with my B&SIL. They already had 3 beautiful well behaved dogs but then they took in a really poorly stray dog and have kept him now so I think 5 dogs might be a bit much for them.

Chandra · 15/08/2006 17:42

Thanks for the information Horseshoe, I will have a look at it now.

YellowFeathers, I may contact you in the future, Sheffield is a bit far but that lady seems like the person I'm looking for.

Now thinking of that, I'm brainless!... the woman who sold us the dog and found this one for us told us that if couldn't cope with them anymore to bring them back to her, she even said that she would take care of them if we were in holidays because she would hate to see her dogs at kennels... would she be the same person? she is in a little town past Wakefield. Now, that was almost 6 yrs ago.
