Have been agonising over this for months !

We have two 9 yr old cats who have become terribly withdrawn in the last 6 months - one of them even had a stress induced illness and had to have a major operation which cost me almost £1K in total.

This is all down to a "visiting cat" that arrives at our house in the early hours (between 12 and 2) every morning. He used to come in our cat flap, pee on our floor, eat our cat's food and wake the entire house up with his noises. We then started locking the flap at night - and now he sits outside banging the flap and making the most horrendous noise !

He also visits my neighbour and physically attacked her old cat who almost dies from a big infection as a result of numerous bites - she only just survived !

We have tried to find out who owns him - but no-one is confessing ! dh wanted to poison him - but I wouldn't let him do that - but now at the end of our tether we have bought a humane trap - and dh plans to trap him and take him somewhere to release him ! I have persuaded dh to release him locally first time - so he has a chance to get home, but will hopefully be too scared to visit us again - but dh is adamant that he gets one chance only and if he comes back he will take him far far away !!

I hate the thought that this brute might be someone's much loved pet - but we are honestly at the end of our tether with him !

What do you reckon ?

Nice idea bran - but I'm not feeling that generous towards it !

If big burly neighbour does show up tell him/her in no uncertain terms to keep their 'pet' (which probably has the unbelievably daft name of Fluffy) under control or you will be forced to report them to the RSPCA for failing to keep their animal properly

TerrbileTwos · 03/08/2006 16:32

hey norah if you don't want to spend the vets fees may i suggest two house bricks and a bottle of whiskey for dutch courage (for you not the cat)

misdee · 03/08/2006 16:36

please dont shoot it, even with a potato gun. remember sparklysgothkats puss almost lost his leg the other week after getting shot.

i'd say trap him, and take him to re-homing place.

Norah · 03/08/2006 16:38

Don't worry - have no intention of shooting it with anything !

Have got the trap - just need to find out where I can take the delightful animal once I have trapped it ! (Actually when I say "I" I really mean "HE" obviously as this is very clearly a job for a man !)

Don't know really - neighbour says he sprays in her house - I have had puddles on floor - but could have been mine being scaredy cats I guess ! Don't think he has sprayed here !

Damn thing has gone awol now - have set trap two nights and no sign of him ! Typical !

ARGH !!! Didn't set trap last night as were a bit tiddley after party - and the little beggar smashed his way in through our locked cat-flap last night - totally smashed it in ! We didn't even hear it !

What a bloody saga !! Rotten git of a cat has now smashed the new cat-flap too ! Last night we set the trap again - and this morning discovered the trap closed (ie had been set off) with nothing in it - it was also tipped over - and the new cat flap bust open !

This cat is like Houdini !!! and obviously angry now !

Anyone got any ideas ??

Put a cat basket on your side of the cat flap at whatever time he usually comes when he gets in slam door and take to cats protection.

jac34 · 07/08/2006 18:47

I bought DH a pea shooter today,he's been after one for ages to stop next doors,bl**dy cat shiting on our lawn.
He says he used to be a great shot when he was a boy.......well we shall see

Norah · 08/08/2006 19:33

No ideas then ?

He didn't come last night - dh thinks he must be traumatised about the trap etc !

Norah, every sympathy, our female cat is being terrorised, she's just finished a course of antibiotics from two infected bites on her back. Loads of cats in our area but there are two bruisers live next door, we think it is them, they are out virtually day and night with no shelter. Grrr.

Norah · 09/08/2006 14:40

Hi Jodee - poor puss ! It's so bloody annoying - I don't know why people aren't held responsible for their cat's actions really - might encourage them to keep better control on them ! if I thought mine were attacking other cats I'd keep them in so they couldn't !

Our brute didn't come last night again - but I'm sure it won't last !

we've had this. Ginger cat kept coming into our house (ds calls it the "orange cat"), only at night, eating my cats' food, spraying in my kitchen etc etc. Tried everything to catch it, putting cat flap on entry only to catch it but it didn't come; trying to get it with a water pistol but it was too quick. Then one morning when ds got up the bloody thing was asleep on our spare bed! It noticed ds and legged it downstairs but ds was quicker than it and ran down and locked the cat flap! And then dh locked it in the utility room and sprayed it with water for approx 10 minutes. It hasn't been back since although it does still sit on our shed.

honeybunny · 10/08/2006 18:07

Wannabe- we did something similar to a nuisance cat near us. Trapped it in the utility room, threw buckets of water at it, screamed in a cat threatening kind of way and let it go after a few minutes, sure enough it never came back!! I'm normally a real animal lover but this creature was vile and brought out the worst in me, besides I was just protecting my own three feline friends.

Norah · 10/08/2006 20:34

Interesting !!!

DH reckons ours has been frightened off - he now thinks it must have got trapped in the trap but managed to escape somehow - but was really really scared - hence the bust cat flap (number two !) - so far it hasn't been back - so we will have to see !

I have two cats and have been through a similar experience except I know the owners live nearby. Their cat is really nasty and injured and terrorised our cats on numerous occasions. We bought an infared cat flap which only our cats can use so long as the batteries don't run out. If I were you it might be fair to advertise to see if it's owned and then take it to a cat rescue home far far away!

arfur · 11/08/2006 13:42

We had something similar happen to our old cat by the neighbours moggies and I am ashamed to say because I am a big animal lover that we put the cat flap on lock in to trap them and when caught dh wrapped them in an old blanket (as they were really viscious (sp?)) and dunked them in our water butt for obviously not long enough to do any damage but long enough to scare the c* out of them and it did work. They still beat up our cat outside on occasion but never came in the house again.
