Worst or Best Dog Stories...

I have pretty much made up my mind to get a puppy Bichon Frise (see thread below this one).

Have you any dog stories which would discourage or encourage a potential dog owner?

Or..what do you hate/love about being a dog owner?

we got a Bichon Frise 3 days ago, it was 3yrs old from a loving family who were moving abroard, it had all its injections been clipped reguarly had lived with children for the last 16 month, yesterday it bit my DS for no apparent reason.

Oh dear, your poor ds

Maybe the dog was frightened, it is still really settling into your family. I hope it has put your ds off his new buddy.

One of my favourite moments so far with one of my dogs was on a therapy visit we were doing (she is a PAT dog - website if you're interested ) to a nursing home. There was an old Greek lady who didn't tend to respond to anything - just sat in her wheelchair pulling bits off a doll she had, or staring into space, and if you spoke to her she'd just ignore you or turn her head away. Anyway when I was taking my dog round the community room to those that wanted to fuss her, this lady suddenly looked up and stretched out her arms, then spent 20 minutes stroking and talking to my dog (in Greek!) with an enormous smile on her face, looking really animated. All the staff came and gathered round and took a photo to send to her family... really made me well up.

Worst things... probably when I spilled cream on the carpet in my previous (rented) house. Thought I'd cleared it up beautifully, but when I came down the next morning, the patch of carpet about 10cm square had been totally EATEN...

I just want to add, we have had a few dogs in our family and owning a dog can be so rewarding, i do think its best to get a puppy and train it yourself though as you can never be %100 sure or a rescued dog's temprement.

Its lovley to be greeted by your dog when you get in or wake up, they are great for kids. I would say if your not intitled to use the PDSA then get insurence as vets bills are huge!

DS was fine by the was just 3 puncture woulds under his eye, he doesnt seem to be put off the dog thank god.

Had loads of wonderful moments....

The worst was with a rescued greyhound we had for a couple of weeks.....He would cock his leg up anything and everything and when the mother-in-law came round he got very turned on by her...he hadn't been spayed and he was a very big boy!! Extremely embarrasing. She doesn't come round that often anymore!

love taking my two for a walk/playing ball wiht them, watching them run about playting with each other.

had one bad experience with a horrible horrible man was very nasty about me and my dog when she was a puppy. - i'm 100% certain if I had been a man he wouldn't have said anything

also carpets being chewed, garden being trashed, furniture being chewed, althou they're worth it.

also nearly lost our staffy once when she was 7 months after her first heat not something I ever want to do again, so if u have a bitch get her spade asap.

YellowFeathers · 28/07/2006 08:43

Hmmmmm....

well worst has to be all the damage our dog has done in the past. Destroyed carpets, a sofa, clothes, shoes etc. Eaten a battery and a bottle of bleach.

but the best bits have to be the simple things like watching him dig holes like a looney on the beach, dd and him chasing each other and amusing one another for hours, watching him play with other dogs and even when you take him for a walk and other dog owners come for a chat. That can be nice.

My dog who is a Beagle, so what you'd class as a smallish dog height wise likes to have a good go with my in laws Rotweiller who is the size of a Donkey (no joke) and weighs 14 stone.

Sadly he can only reach one end and lets just say its the opposite to what he would have gone for if he was a she.

What an eye full
