Hi,

I have had a look back at previous threads here, and like Patttsy's family we lead a busy life, but do you think I could possibly take on the commitment of having a hamster?

I am home every evening (not always at the same time tho'). My children are in junior/secondary school. I am pretty sure I could find someone of our school chums to take care of it when we are away for a couple of days?

Well, what do you think? Can I have a hamster? Pleasssssseeeeee!

My mum got 2 Russian Dwarf hamsters from a pet shop. Told they were both boys.....she ended up with 32 of the little suckers cos she couldn't sex them accurately

Fortunately, (according to NomDePlume's fantastic link)hamsters are happiest living alone, AND I am getting a male, as they are supposed to be more docile than the females

Now, all I have to do is convince Dh (piece of cake!) and find the time to get over to the breeder.

NomDePlume, be sure to check out my cute hamster photo in Member Profiles

we got our hamster from a pet shop, but we visited and watched her being handled by the pet shop staff first. she was the most easygoing one they had, about 12 weeks old rather than a baby, as then we could know her character (it was for my 6 year old so I wanted a good natured one). she's really lovely, temperament wise. I have had gerbils and rats but currently think the hamster is very cute, and very suitable for small children. rats maybe better for older children or adults, they are a bit more exciting.

A friend of my Mum used to breed hamsters and she told us when I bought my sister one that quite often the reaon that they bite is because they can sense if you are nervous - esp if your hands are sweating a bit from being nervous - they can smell it and it makes them nervous.
