My cat's 'third eyelid's' are protruding

Anyone have any experience of this? For a couple of days now his third eyelids are coming over his eyes almost to his pupil but not quite.. other than that he is ok, eating and drinking and going out etc, but is quieter than usual.

Do I need to take him to the vets? I am always wary of vets as have been spectactularly ripped of a couple of times by them...

BTW, his sister is absolutely fine, no symptoms at all.

Thankyou in advance
Nova x

No don't take him to the vet's (i did) that is how i know what it is, it can be brought on by stress. i.e another cat bullying him, or have you moved house lately? or had a baby?

It will go on it's own, i know it looks abit weird, but he will be fine.

HTH

I think this can be a sign of infection/virus.

I am sure though that it is worht going to the vet about.

I know vets can be nightmare, do you have any insurance for them?

I got some on my cat after a minor incident, the policy cost me £128 for the year, it came up for renewal with no claim so I thought I would cancel it. 36 hrs before the policy lapsed he got ill and ended up in hospital for 2 weeks and cost over £1000. He now needs another op which will cost another £1000 which will happen next week. (and if this sounds expensive this is the 3rd cat I have known with thte same problem, all 3 at diff vets and all 3 cost the same amount - to within a few pounds).

This years policy will be £152 so in total I am around £1750 up on the deal he would have had to have been put down without the insurance, it seems expensive but it is well worth it.

We did move house about 6 weeks ago, but they both seem to be happy here..

definately something to think about...

how long did it take to clear up?

Was thinking about insurance, but as I have two of them it makes it more pricey- but Im definately going to look into it as I can't be doing with the stress of knowing theres something wrong and umming and aarring over taking him to the vets!

does he have diarrhoea? if so will be a virus that self cures within 7-1o days.or could be weight loss realted - is your cat underweight?

pucca · 31/05/2006 23:34

I can't remember tbh, a couple of weeks - ish, it is obviously up to you whether or not you take him to the vets, all i know is what happened with my cat and paid £18 to be told oh its stress, he is fine.

I think he was being bullied a little by next doors cat, and that was what had caused it.

I think as long as your cat is still eating and drinking and seems ok, i would personally hold back on the vet but obviously if he deteriorates in the mean time then take him to be checked over.

Hope he is ok. Smile

Hes a big boy notanotter (about 10 month old), but I must admit I do think he has lost some weight. He sneezed once earlier too. Ive not noticed the diarrhoea as he goes outside, but not noticed a runny bum so to speak.

is he pure-bred?

Novacane · 31/05/2006 23:36

No, hes a domestic short hair.

He also had some trauma to one of his eyes (bloodshot eye huge swelling and a cut) but that was a long while ago- maybe 3 1/2 months ago

most likely is toro virus and needs no treatment - if not better in 7-10 days then see vet ( a nice non ripping off one) or alternatively come back to mumsnetWink

Thankyou for all you lovely replies- think I will wait a week and see how he is, if its not cleared up take him- been reading scary things about cancer on the net- but I suppose if he has that he will still have it in a week won't he. (gawd that sounds awful doesnt it, but you know what I mean)

So Im guessing he needs lots of cuddles in the meantime!

Im lucky that DS (2.1) doesn't ever bother with either of them- apart from pushing them away when the cats go fussing over him!!!
