Siamese fighter fish, need advice

mieowscintillant · 01/04/2006 23:36

I brought a red female fighter a few months back, but couldn't see her in the tank, looked everywhere and couldn't see her so assumed she had died, brought a purple fighter last week, but have just found the red one, after I moved the Pelto's house. She is alive but looking a bit pale and her fins look like they have been nipped. How can I make her better?

you have two bettas in the same tank? Shock

You need to seperate them immediately and put some stress coat in the water.

mieowscintillant · 02/04/2006 00:29

I didn't mean to have two in the same tank, I couldn't find the red one at all, but have just found her. I have looked up on the net and it says that 2 females can live in the same tank, but not males.

If you don't have a second tank, bettas can actually survive perfectly well at roomt temperature without much filteration. Their natural habitat is shallow pools, so you can keep one in a vase quite easily. I kept mine in a vase for a while after he got bullied until he recuperated then returned him to the main tank. Or you can segregate the tank with a divider, which provides good stimualtion for them as they will try to fight through the glass. You can't keep two bettas together though, they will fight to death.

Kelly1978 · 02/04/2006 00:31

crossed posts, I've never heard of keeping two together, that's more than likely why her fins are getting nipped. she will prob get killed by the other.

I love bettas, they are beautiful fish, full of personality. I can't have them unfortuantely, my fish would eat it in one mouthful!

mieowscintillant · 02/04/2006 00:32

Can they survive in a goldfish tank then? I have a cold water fish tank with one goldfish in it, with filters and o2 line.

I actually wonder if the angelfish or black widows have been attacking her.

Kelly1978 · 02/04/2006 00:34

I should think so, as long as you don't let it get too cold. It will be fine at normal room temp, you will jsut ahve to be careful come mid winter. It will have more of a chance in there than with the other betta anyway. In america they are kept in tiny betta bowls at room temp, but it is warmer there,

Kelly1978 · 02/04/2006 00:35

how big are your angels? It might be them. I doubt a black widow would.

mieowscintillant · 02/04/2006 00:35

So annoying because I asked the bloke in the shop if it would be a problem with the angelfish or black widows, and he said it wuld be fine, but I noticed that she seemed to hide a lot. and the new one also hides.

I have one angel and he is big..

Kelly1978 · 02/04/2006 00:37

how long have you had them? Do you have a lot of air flow int he tank? Betta dont cope well with current at all, and they need time to get used to the enviroment, then you should see her start to patrol the top of the tank.

kelly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BED!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Think about the in laws! Grin Angry

mieowscintillant · 02/04/2006 00:38

I have a filter and a bubble o2 line, The red one I brought a few months back and the purple one last week.

lol, mars, I can't sleeeeeeeeeeeeep! Sad

The betta should be happier by now. Have you lots of hiding spaces where she can gain her confidence? It might be the angel though, esp if it is big. We have three angels about 3" each, they are very peaceful, but I do know that they can be quite vicious. It might be better if the angel had soem company, they are best in groups of 3 or more.

mieowscintillant · 02/04/2006 00:43

Yep lots of hiding places, I was told to have 1 angelfish or 3, as if you have 2 they will fight. I could buy another 2, have enough space, I actually had to remove some fish as they were attacking the angelfish (misdee had them off me)

I think that the red betta actually got stuck under the pleto's house :(

OP posts:
Kelly1978 · 02/04/2006 00:48

what on earth was attacking the angels? How big is your tank?

We have 240l tropical:
1 very large parrotfish
3 large angels
2 I don't know whats! some sort of very pretty large amercian cichlids!
2 medium clown loach
i large catfish and 1 large plec
4 small firemouths
3 large silver dollars
1 very lonely black widows (cycling fish - his mates got eaten!)
Our tank is very full, I actually lost a couple a few weeks ago due to nitrate levels rising too much. Sad

mieowscintillant · 02/04/2006 00:58

I have a 120l tank (I think) The angel was being attacked by black tertas.
I have 1 angel
5 glowlights
6 Hariquins
2 pletos (one is misdee, she left it in my tank when she brought it)
5 black widows
1 sucky fish (not sure of its real name, inherited with the tank)
2 bettas

I lost a few last year, due to anmonia levels rising

that sounds really nice! I kinda wish some of our fish were smaller so we could have more. I can't ahve anything smaller than 2 inches cos of the parrot. I'm not sure why the black widow is still alive. Good luck with the betta anyway!

mieowscintillant · 02/04/2006 01:02

Ok thanks, I will sort it all out in the morning, i'm off to bed now. Night
