Goldfish - what should I do with them ?

I have a couple goldfish I bought for DS for a bit of fun.

I now regret this as my tank isn't very big and the fish constantly come up to the surface to gulp air !

I change their water quite a lot, but the water gets dirty very quickly.

I feel very cruel, but I don't really have room for a big fish tank.

Can someone tell if the fish would survive if I let them loose in nature ? Where ?

Alternatively would a pet shop take them back ?

Thanks !

How many sticks do you put in a day? A friend came round yesterday and said that our water level needed topping up. He thought the extra water would make the filter work harder. Water definitely seems to have cleared overnight. Our second fish is looking realy good.

I put in a good handful, but I'm feedign a 240l tank, and I don't feed everyday.

We only have a small tank, with one fish. What would you recommend? The pot says sticks but they look more like large pellets to me.

how big is the fish? I'd jsut do maybe 3-4 pellets for a medium size fish. If he starts shrinking you can up the amount.

He's kinda small/medium. LOL at "shrinking"!

I am in a serious mood so here goes.....It might be a good idea to teach kids and some mums that living creatures are to be respected and not just bought for fun.
When we were given ours, yeh, it was inconvenient but they are kind of cute they learn to know when they are going to fed and come to the surface to eat.
I am no expert. But they will grow if you put them in a bigger tank.Small is good.Clean water is good...Buy the poor things a filter.
Or Better still next time by a book on fish, buy a tank, a filter and then A FISH.....
And enjoy them with the kids!

PS.Don't flush them down the loo when they do die.Otherwise you will have a lot of explaining to do.'Mummie when Great Uncle Harry died why didn't we flush him down the loo?'
