Teaching a pup to walk on the lead

We are not at dog obedience classes yet, because she has only just had her second vaccination so I have been trying to teach her to walk on a lead in the garden.

Problem is she just sits on her ample arse and doesn't want to budge when I put the lead on her. I can coax her to walk alongside me on the lead only by showing her a doggy choc and holding it a few inches in front of her nose, stopping to give it to her every ten paces or so, and then getting another one out and repeating the same process.

There must be a better way?

I was hoping to take her out for her first proper walk this weekend (a week post her 2nd vacc.), but it good be an excruitiating experience at this rate!

I had the same problem with my pup last year, so uncannily enough i thought what the hell, got the kids ready to go out and stook the dog in the pram basketGrin

After about 10 minutes, he hurtled out to see what all the fuss was about and we have never looked back since, and nor has he been under the pram again except when he thinks there is something for himGrin

lol Smile - least you had the back up of the pram basket though...My 13 week old pup is already very big (circa 2 stones) - Bernese Mountain Dog; so no pram basket for her sadly...

My dog is a weimaraner and was 11 weeks old at the timeGrinSo fairly big.!!!

I only just managed to squeeze him under!!!!

They do say, thet if you want them to walk with you, then do offer them a treat like you stated you were doing before.

Hold the lead as normal and waft a treat under his nose then let him follow you. For every few steps give him the treat then as follows below.

Each time you walk, space the timing of the treats so eventually the walks will be further.
