Katymac · 26/03/2006 13:28

i have been persuaded that baby rabbits are easy and cuddly.....I bought 2

I have 2 boys (from the same litter) they are in a hutch in the garden with a run, food & water

Please tell me I have done the right thing

Please tell me if I need to do anything else

Katymac · 26/03/2006 13:30

i think its harpsichordcarrier who is the expert

rabbits are great fun and very clean if taken care of, did you know you can house train them? saves all that traipsing back and forth to the hutch and bales of straw you buy, you can train them to use a litter tray like a cat.

if your panicing why not pick up a cheap book on rabbit care from the pet shop to reassure yourself you're doing everything right? oh and make absolutely sure they're both boys! otherwise you'll end up with alot more than 2!

buffythenappyslayer · 26/03/2006 13:35

i got told that boys do fight alot.so neutering might help prevent bunny fights!ive got a girl dwarf lop eared one.shes huge!and she thinks she a dog!(she growls and makes a noise alot like barking!)shes also very viscious and goes for you when you try to stroke her!she used to be really nice and cuddly, but then suddenly changed.
good luck with your two!i want anotherbut dh says no!Sad

Katymac · 26/03/2006 15:37

Do I need to have 1 done or both (can you tell I'm worried)

OP posts:
jodie1984 · 26/03/2006 15:50

get both done but they might still fight. u need to watch out for fly-strike in the summer

Katymac · 26/03/2006 19:05

Bump for more bunny advise??

OP posts:
jodie1984 · 26/03/2006 19:21

what advice is it u need?

getting rabbits castrated well calm them down but males tend to fight regardless but not always it a teratory thing (top dog) you may have to put one in another hutch but see how it goes. they need hay to eat aswell as rabbit food and fresh veg every day. the best rabbit food is supa rabbit, you can get it from most pet shops and vets.

they also need yearly vaccination to prevent against myxomatosis and Viral Haemorrhagic Disease (VHD). both can be picked up very easily and are difficult to treat.

HTH have fun

Katymac · 26/03/2006 19:24

Thanks I will speak to the vet tomorrow about the injections and castration (makes my DH cringe)

What is flystrike?

I did know about Hay...but thought fresh veggies were a treat

fly strike happens in warm weather went flys lay eggen in and arroung the rabbits bottom and the eggs hatch to maggots and eat the rabbits flesh. you can but sprays from the vets to prevent it, it is quite common unfortunatly.

My advice would be to get them neutured. I have two lovely male netherland dwarf rabbits who have been neutures and they are the best of friends. Mine are house rabbits and they are so cheeky. One of them jumps onto the sofa if you have any food and sometimes tries to take it out of your mouth, especially if its peanuts. My smaller one tends to be a bit feisty and he does growl at you sometimes but he's still adorable and gives you kisses on your face - yes rabbits like to lick your face and hands!! You can either go one way or the other, if its easier to keep them in the hutch then thats fine but they will probably not be quite as friendly towards humans and will probably prefer their own company but they will get plenty of fresh air. I have kept mine in the house and the only problem is that they actually prefer to be indoors now and if I try to put them on the lawn in the garden, the first chance they get they go running back into the house and they sit at the bottom of the stairs, its quite funny watching them skidding along the laminate floor though. Its a good idea to get them vaccinated too, your vet will advise you.
