Miniature Poodle looking for a new home

DH, DD and I are moving to Croatia sometime in June but can unfortunately only take one of our poodles with us due to transportation costs.
This was a very difficult decision and today we have decided that Charlie will be the one to be rehomed.
Charlie is an apricot miniature poodle - very beautiful and good natured. He's very shy and easily frightened due to being ill treated before we got him. He's a healthy dog, with pedigree (we paid £385) and with all up to date vaccinations.
Charlie is 5 years old, loves walks and gets very excited when taken out.
He gets on with children and guests although is very protective of "hand that feeds him" and will watch like a hawk when guests are in the house - cute and funny.
We love Charlie very much and regret that he is unable to come with us. The only reason he's the one being rehomed and not Barney (our other poodle) is because he is healthier and younger. Barney has a bad back and will need lots of medical treatement when older - this wouldn't be fair on a new owner.
We don't want any money but require that he goes to a loving family or individual where we would be able to make a phonecall and ask about how he is doing.
For anyone who doesn't know - poodles don't shed hair and are suitable for asthmatics (my dd and I both are and have never had problems) and they don't have a doggy smell which makes your home smell exactly as it did before. People are always surprised when they come to our house because the smell just isn't there and we have 2 dogs :)
Oh, and Charlie is not cut "poodle style" - he looks like a teddy bear. :) :)

Stop !

How much are the transportation costs ??

Can't we help you raise the money to keep Charlie and Barney together ????

MrsWood · 22/03/2006 21:21

Would love to but the quotes are around £450 per dog! My DH jokes he could buy 2 new dogs for that :)

Awww you poor thing. This is like Sophie's Choice or something.

I fancy a poodle because I'm a dog lover but am allergic to most dogs. I'm not quite ready.

Have you considered trying to rehome both of them together and getting yourself a new dog (or two) in Croatia rather than splitting them up? TBH I would be concerned about taking a dog who is used to living with another dog and may well be traumatised to have lost everyone like this.

Sorry if this is upsetting. I expect you've already thought all this through.

noddyholder · 22/03/2006 21:37

Does he like cats?

MrsWood · 22/03/2006 21:43

noddyholder - not sure, he's never really been around any but he tries to chase the ones he sees from afar...
Also, sent you another version of that photo - much clearer :)

spidermama - as I said, Barney would require a lot of medical attention when older and that just wouldn't be fair on anew owner - it can be quite expensive. This would maybe also spoil Charlie's chances of finding a good home. Not to mention the chances of rehoming just one is much higher.

I'm so upset about Charlie having to go, I don't think I could cope with losing both of them. We have just about managed to explain the situation to our dd (Charlie "doesn't like Croatia. He wants to stay with his friends" etc.)...

We've had them both since they were puppies and this is heartbreaking, although, being different personalities, they don't seem to get along that well anyway so I'm sure they won't see it as a problem.

How does he get on with bigger dogs? My husband has an 11 month old German Shepherd (supposed to be a guard dog but is a complete coward)and we have been looking for a small dog for me. Something that can sit on my lap and be cuddled.

MrsWood · 22/03/2006 21:51

marialou - in the park, he runs up to big dogs without fear - never had bad experiences but that depends a lot on the bigger dog too - they were all friendly towards him and they ran endlesly together... If the other dog is good natured too, I'd imagine they'd get on, but that's just my opinion of course.
Charlie is very much a sleep on the lap / cuddle type dog - my dh quite often says "he'd be happiest if he was on your face. When he dies, we'll make him into a scarf" - very gentle and loving.

I forgot to mention, before we would place Charlie in a new home, maybe it would be a good idea if he makes few visits first - so we can both be sure of the decision. Something like when kids start new nursery - settling in process.

Sasha our German shepherd is a real softie, she prefers dogs that are smaller than her cos she's a bit of a coward. Will talk to my dh tomorrow as he would prefer a bigger dog something more macho! but I am working on him.

MrsWood · 22/03/2006 21:59

That's great thanks - did you want a photo?

Just an update - Charlie is now nicely settled in his new home. My MIL's friend and her family took him in and already love him to bits - he will most certainly have a great life with them as they have a lovely house and a lovely big garden - and most of all, the whole family already thinks of him as a part of their family. Thank you everyone for your input regarding his rehoming. This was a very difficult decision for us, and it was nice getting support here :)
