It's not immediately effective..is it?

the accepted standard is 2 weeks after jabs but our vet said 1 week was enough. frankly I was going up the walls let alone the puppy by that stage so I would have risked it whether the vet had said so or not.

have you got the puppy yet?

handlemecarefully · 21/03/2006 23:02

Those are my sentiments entirely - feel sorry for pup that she doesn't get to see the big wide world.

Yes we've got her. Had her since 11th March. Going well, except for the biteing!

friend's attitude to this was 'well that's what we pay pet insurance for' and never bothered to keep her puppy in at all.

Well, we don't with babies either so why not? Yours is a Burnese Mountain dog isn't it? there was one at the vet's today. they're ginormous!!

handlemecarefully · 21/03/2006 23:13

I'm flattered you remembered!

Yes they are ginormous! I'm taking her to a puppy party at the vets on Friday (with 5 other pups). I expect the other puppies will run for cover. She already weighs 12 kilos at 12 weeks!

depends on the make of vaccine usually 1wk

oops · 22/03/2006 09:15

you can get her to mix with fully vaxd dogs, and i would say that you could carry her round top get her used tp things eg buses etc...but she sounds like she ciould carry you round!

shimmy21...what a sad attitude...if your friend had ever seen a puppy die from parvovirus or distemper then she/he would change that attitude pretty ponto.
with parvo they have bloody diarrhoea and can die a sad and horrible death.

anyway, most vax manufacturers reckon 7-14 days after 2nd vex which with most of them is at 12 weeks...

maybe push her round in a pram for a bit of light entertainment for the neighbours! Smile

handlemecarefully is the puppy still living on omelets and steak? or has she come back to the real world with a puppy bump, lol

wannaBe1974 · 22/03/2006 09:18

I agree with Oops, having the attitude of "that's what we have pet insurance for" is a very irresponsible attitude to have. We don't just vaxinate dogs so that we don't have to pick up vet costs, parvo virus is lethal and extremely contagious. Most puppies will die from parvo virus - horrible.

Don't worry guys - I'll be leaving it for 7 days post 2nd vaccination. Wouldn't want to risk a dreadful illness.

Yes actually - she is still living on her gourmet diet of chuck steak, tripe etc. Whilst I was initially very sceptical of the necessity for this, when I went to pick her up at 11 weeks old and saw how much she had grown since I last saw her (at 8 weeks) - and given that they are expected to put on 2lbs per week, I sort of began to understand the breeder's rationale for all that quality protein.....

Oh but the smell of partially cooked tripe - boy does it make you gag!
