My wonderfull 7yr old cocker spaniel, has always had anxiety separation, which we have deallt with, about 5 years ago he bit me while I was leaving the house and he ran out the door and jumped in the car and wouldnt get out, as I went to usher him out the car he bit me. Since then I have dealt with it by making sure he was in the kitchen and door shut etc before i left, and everything has been fine.. Unfortunatelt this weekend he bit my dh, and pierced the skin did not let go, locked his teeth into his hand and has fractured his finger bone. The situation now is the trust issue, we have 3 children to think about aswell!!! DH does not trust him at all now, this morning while we all left to go to work, school etc, the dog was the worst I have seen him he was growling and look very aggresive, its very frightening... He is such a wonderfull dog other than that, hes a big softy and its hard to believe he can change like that.. He is great round other animals, we have kittens, and they think hes their mummy, he lets them sleep with him. He would never be aggresive to other dogs. Im not sure if anyone will re-home, the dogs trust will but could take months!!! and im uneasy now with the dog around the children etc... after hes bitten that badly.. and I do not want to have him pts... If anyone could help or give me any ideas i would be most gratefull!!! I have a number for a cocker spaniel re-homing centre, which im calling this evening, Its just I feel we need to get this sorted out soon, as Im soooo worried he will bite again. I am based in Bristol.

You really really need a behaviourist to do a home visit and help you with this.

I agree a behaviourist sounds the best option they may be able to set up strategies to help and/or identify trigger points. I would be anxious too but with only two incidents I think there's a very good chance you can sort this out.

Is a dog walker an option for throughout the day?

Or a neighbour who can pop in and have a coffee and a cuddle with him?

But definitely need a behaviourist

We are going to try and control this as much as we can, ive had no luck with cocker spaniel re-homing centres, they basically said NO as hes bittten and one even advised the only option was to pts!!!!!! which to me is not an option. The fact that this dog is just very scared when he thinks hes going to be left... I am going to contact a dog behaviourist today, but if anyone can recomend any that they know are fantastic that would be great, and we will travel..

Loulabella as the problem is in your home it is really important that the behaviourist comes to your home so they can really get a handle on the problem. The Association of Pet Dog Behaviourists would be the place to start.
