Recommendations on stopping kittens scratching/climbing?

Got a new kitten who keeps jumping up on furniture - particularly the sofa which is fine at the minute but we have a new one arriving in a month (not great timing I know!) and I want to deter it as much as possible. He has a scratching post, but I think it seems more curiosity and the general 'mad half an hour' when it happens.

Have been doing a bit of research and it seems citrus sprays are quite good - any recommendations on which one? Any other tips generally?

Best thing is to learn to clip their nails ! Its very easy to do, start when they are young. Then it wont give them much pull on the climb!!! Get someone to hold kitten, scruff if too if it wont sit still or wrap it in a towel. Pull one leg out at a time to clip nails. Get a pair of human nail clippers and trim the sharp edge. If you can see the 'quick' part of the nail (the pink area) clip about 4 mm away from this. If you cut it too close it will bleed and hurt kitty. In order to see the nail, hold the claw in your hand and just push on the soft pad to each nail, this will expose the nail. If your worried if you go to the local vet and see the nurse (should be free of charge) and ask them to show you how to clip the nails. Its easy. I worked in a vets for 15 yrs and used to clip my cats nails from being a kitten then she just used to sit there and let me do it in the end.Saves your furniture!

I do not agree with clipping cats/kittens nails and in fact they will try to sharpen them again by scratching making the problem worse. A kitten will jump about and scratch, its what cats do.

I have got a kitten. She is exact same as yours - climbing and scratching everything during mad hour! I have bought quite a few interactive toys and they seem to keep her occupied. Although they don't entirely stop her from being mischievous :o

She is up my curtains at least five times a day!

We made loud 'tss tss tss' noise & squirted water pistol near not at ours. They learned to associate the noise with something surprising. If we make the noise now when they're doing something we don't want them too they stop. And we've got them a nice big scratching post.
