Does this sound OTT for a puppy feeding regime?

Collecting my 10 week old Bernese Mountain Dog on 11 March. The Breeder has in the interim sent me the following feeding regime (it sounds very gourmet):

Breakfast:
Finely cut chuck steak, tripe, handful of complete, Litterlac milk

4-5 hours later:
Scrambled egg & cottage cheese / Boiled egg and cottage cheese/ omelette stuffed with cottage cheese (They are partial to grated cheese sprinkled upon the above)

4-5 hours later:
Same as breakfast

Late Evening:
Chicken and complete / Coley or Sardines and pasta, Live yoghurt

Bloody hell! Will she be wanting fresh parsley chopped and sprinkled over her omelette. How about a nice bottle of beaujolais?

Sorry to be flippant - but in all seriousness, is this what feeding pup's is truly about....and again quite gravely and soberly now - what did dogs do in their wilder past a few centuries ago - scramble their own eggs?????

Don't get me wrong if this is what Belle needs (cute name - eh?) then that is what she will get. Just a trifle surprised that it is necessary....

I'm sure I've seen food for dogs in tins in the supermarket... Grin

lol - unintended pun re 'trifle' (I expect this was an ommission from the breeder's list)

Any other thoughts on this?

Any advice re whether it seems OTT or not from experienced dog owners?

Seems very OTT to me - I was told the best thing to feed a puppy on was a complete dry dog food like IAMS - ours wouldn't eat it (and still won't 2 1/2 years on) so we give him tinned dog food and sometimes fresh meat.

There is no way any dog should be eating cheese! No harm I suppose in giving them a bit of scrambled egg occasionally, but I wouldn't get into the habit.

Vets are a good source of info on this subject and will often give away free samples!

MamaG · 03/03/2006 17:07

oh meant to say, get a complete dog food especially for puppies. :)

wannaBe1974 · 03/03/2006 18:31

bloody hell! who's the breeder, Gordon Ramsey?

Seriously though, way ott. As this is a dog, it should be eating ... dog food? Any good vet will tell you that giving a dog too much human food isn't in actual fact good for it, especially not high fat foods like cheese and .. did you say omelets? I would get a good puppy food, complete dry foods are good - I would recommend James Wellbeloved as they are very good and are hypoalergenic so very gentle on the stomach. You need to be aware though that as this puppy has been on such a rich diet, that you will have to introduce puppy food gradually. Try mixing in a bit with some boiled chicken and rice, maybe add a bit of cottage cheese, do this over the course of about a week, gradually reducing the chicken and increasing the puppy food, until you're giving just puppy food.

I wouldn't recommend giving too much scrambled egg as this can cause constipation in a young puppy.

Thanks mama and wannabe - that's helpful

sounds like the dog should be shitting through the eye of a needle!! just think of all the tarter on its teeth with nothing crunchy!! i woould advise a compleat dry food, mine is on beta puppy very good i think and she loves it.

CountessDracula · 07/03/2006 14:34

i think we used to give ours weetabix for breakfast and then puppy dried food

it sounds insane tbh

Now only feed fresh meat and veg

pucca · 07/03/2006 14:35

Pmsl @ Jodie Grin

Yes i will agree with everyone else when our pedigree labrador was a pup he was on a decent complete dry puppy food that was soaked with warm water, plus a few dry biscuits (complete)through the day.

I would go with wannaBe's advice of JWB, you can get it from Pets At Home, it is about £32 for a huge sack but it will last you at least a month (we have a medium size puppy and his lasts him about 2 months, so I am taking into account the fact that your pup will be HUGE!!)

I would have only expected to feed scrambled egg if puppy had a loose tummy, a raw egg with shell once a week is very good for a nice shiney coat though, just be sure to feed it somewhere that is easy to clean up!!

Also, please don't feed your new puppy ANY cooked bones, the heat changes the structure of the bones and can make them splinter into very sharp steaks that can harm your pup, raw bones and meat is absolutely fine (raw chicken wings are a lovely treat for pups especially frozen ones to help with their teething, and no pup won't die from eating raw chicken, their stomache acids are meant to deal with the bacteria in raw meat. Dogs are more likely to pick up something nasty from bad water than any food.)

Good luck with your pup, and take loads of pictures, they grow so quickly and it is so easy to forget along the way :)

Thanks everyone for confirming that the dog breeder is a bit of a loon!

SNORT at the menu
In the days when we had our purebreads the only extras were for brekkie

one weetbix, one raw egg (protein) and one scoop of grobone (calcium powder esp good for large breed dogs)and special doggy milk
That was 20 yrs ago.

I would get a vets opinion too - when you take Belle into them the first time, or phone them if thats ages away. It does sound very OTT but you also can upset a pup by changing its diet suddenly so may have to gourmet for a little bit initially.
Th complete puppy foods are excellent nowadays too.
