Anyone have a house rabbit or house guinea pig with a cage like this?

Indoor cage

Can you just leave the see through lid off when you're in so they can climb in and out?

I like the idea of these cages cos they seem easy to clean out. Presumably you can just take the lid off and pour the contents of the base into a bin bag? When I was younger we had an outdoor wooden hutch that you had to scrape sawdust out of using a spade and it took forever.

I wouldn't use one of those cages. I have an indoor rabbit and she is out almost all day with her cage open so she can get in and out as she pleases. You would need to have a litter box separate from the cage if you are going to be taking your rabbit out or it might start peeing around the house if it can't get back in its cage easily. My rabbit also likes to chew the bars of the cage, she has chew toys but prefers that for wearing her teeth down.

Oh and in terms of clearing out, I put a fleece blanket in the rabbit cage (sawdust can be bad for them) and just shake it off, wash it and put it back in. She has a litter box with hay and newspaper as they quite often like to do their stuff whilst eating.

I was thinking of just taking the lid off the base so it can get in and out. Would that not work?

Have also seen cages like this

Do you use any other bedding apart from the fleece blanket? Any straw/hay/wood shavings/shredded paper?

No, a fleece blanket only, I have a hay rack for hay and the litter tray. I also have a separate box for digging in.

Hmmm that does sound simpler.

It's a lot less mess than sawdust and hay, just make sure you have a decent amount of hay available for eating.
