Wanting to get a cat

DD and I would love to get a young cat to come and join our family. We are half way to persuading DH. DD is nearly 4yo.

I had a cat when growing up. She came to join us when I was 9yo and my little sister was born a year later. She then lived to be over 21yo. And I remember how lovely it was, but also know that I didn;t do half, or even a quarter, oof her care.

So please tell me...if we get a cat, what should we expect?

We have a tabby cat, called George. He is nearly 9 years old so we werent sure how he was going to be with ds, especially when he started crawling.

He is fine and I needn't have worried. If ds gets 'too close for comfort' George just moves away or hides on the stairs!

He is a good cat and doesnt scratch at furniture or make a mess. He sleeps most of the day and is out most of the night as he has a cat flap. Although at the moment he laying near me as its raining outside!

I love cats and would love more!

Ive got a 7mnth old black and white cat and she is the most gorgeous little thing!!
my 3yr old adores her and they play for ages together!! When he gets too rough, the cat just runs off and hides for a lil bit,but she always comes back for more!
Shes not like any cat ive ever seen before(my mum has always had cats) cos when i come home she rolls about at the door, she eats EVERYTHING she can (mash,pasta,beans-u name it,she eats it!) ! But the best bit is that she comes to bed with me everynight and lays right by my legs purring away.
Cats are really loving,i think theyre the best pets :-)

tigi

lol at the lead - hope she likes it next time. Oscar our cat just used to sit down so it was like taking him for a drag rather than a walk at the memory

Love cats, but can be a pain! just ironed and put out ds P.E shirt this morn & the cat came in from the garden and jumped up on it with wet muddy feet! grrrrr.
Anyone trained a cat to wipe their feet?
By the way i think it's really good for children to grow up looking after pets.

Think DH is convinced

Hulababy, meiow. did you get a cat?
Did we scare Dh? Let us know.

Hulababy · 24/02/2006 10:41

He is persuaded. But not got one yet.

We are going next weekend to the Cat's Shelter to have a looka nd see if there is anything we need to do/take and to check no home visit, etc.

Then weekend after we are in London - last weekend away for a while.

Then hopefully we will go back and get a cat the following weekend.

Oh, and in mean time I am trying to chase the builders to come and do their snagging - we have 6 internal doors, so called fire doots too, that don't click shut. So a cat could actually push them and get into the room. Want the builders to sort these asap.

I'd be interested to hear about pros/cons of male vs. female cats. Or is it just a matter of choosing one with a nice cat personality, and the sex doesn't matter so much?

Hulababy · 27/02/2006 09:24

Have to say that when we went to look yesterday we didn't really mind anbout the sex of the cat. We just went and sat and played with all the cats and saw how they interacted with us, and most importantly for us - especially as DD is under 5 and they don't normally adopt to families with under 5s - how they interacted and dealt with DD.

I have a neutered male rescue cat, got him when he was approx 2 yrs old and have had him for 6 years. He's fab, very low maintenance, short haired so no grooming.

He's NEVER, EVER scratched anything, is very gentle and will just walk away from DD when he gets fed up with her constant petting (read as 'harrasment'). Very sweet natured, easy to care for and a pleasure to have around the house.

Well after yesterday's visit to the Shelter we are definitely getting a cat :) In 2 week's time after our weekend away to London.

DD "passed" and we are okay to adopt a cat, ven though she is under 5. :)

There were some adorable cats at the Shelter yesterday.
