DH wants cat to go because of fleas

I have treated my cat with Frontline, then Advantage and now back to Frontline but I keep finding live fleas on him, gross. I had the house treated but this week the kids have new bites! I dread swimming lessons because my DS has a load on his arm that he scratched so they haven't healed. Feel mortified! Cat treated again this morning with Frontline. Vet said F doesn't work so sold me Advantage. That didnt work either so I am back to F. Lady at Pets at Home said if he was rained on within 48 hrs of being treated it would have washed off. DH gone away and I am faced with weekend of washing. His parting words were 'the bloody cat will have to go'. That seems really shallow as there are so many unwanted cats in the world but I am fed up with it! Kids would be upset too. Don't know what to do!!

Rip fleas spray as korma says, and either Fronline Combo or a Seresto collar from your vet.

The fleas will be in the carpet edges and cushion beading etc. We had this problem when we first moved to our present house. The animals had vacated but the flea eggs were still there. Our poor cats were flea-free til then.

The only proper cure was to thoroughly blitz the house to kill the eggs and very very regularly deflea the cats, we ended up using Advocate which does worms as well.

Hopefully now you have done the house and you are doing flea treatment as regularly as possible it will settle down.

I have used Strikeback in house as recommended by Pets at Home? Seem to have spent a fortune in past few weeks! I seem to have so much stuff in my house, cushions, throws, toys, time for de cluttered. Have a leather sofa and not sure if I can spray down behind cushions, don't want to wreck it? Only a few weeks ago when I asked DFS if they'd take my old soda and they said they wouldn't because of previous flea problems I thought 'how revolting' and now it's me! Don't even want kids to have friends round in case they're bitten!

My poor cats had an infestation two years ago as they invited a stray friend in for the winter and we were all bitten, no good just treating the cats they are only the restaurant - the house is the hotel!

My vet recommended Indorex Household Flea Spray pretty expensive stuff (one can will spray a 3 bedroom house) , but lasts for twelve months and kills the cycle of fleas hatching each time you hoover. Eggs very unlikely to be in your leather sofa but a damp cloth in all the crevices will get them out if they are. Also empty your vacuum cleaner or bag into your outside bin after you've hoovered as a the eggs will hatch in a warm hoover and jump out to start the cycle again. We had almost instant results with this approach and washing bedding @60C.

Thank you Smile. More good advice on here than at the vet's!

Only stronghold works for my cats.

If you're on good terms with any cat owning neighbours, it might be an idea to see if they're flea free. Your cat is catching them somewhere...

pinkhebe · 28/04/2012 19:38

We also used indorex. It's very good

I have a mad neighbour with a few cats, I can't imagine she treats hers. There's lots of cats in the area and lots of foxes too. He is now in the newly scrubbed utility and not allowed out of the house til Monday in case rain washes treatment off! Fed up, husband away and children fought all day while I washed everything in sight!

Cats don't generally get that wet in the rain and most of these treatments concentrate in the oily layer on top of the skin which is pretty waterproof. Dogs which swim lots might find the efficacy reduces quicker than others but it's pretty unlikely to be an issue for your cat. If you're really worried then the Seresto collar I mentioned earlier is sustained release so it would continue to be effective even if your cat took a daily bath.

The only thing that worked for me was the smoke bombs. I bought them online, I tried everything else. The kids were covered in bites it was embarrassing

Fluffycloudland77 · 02/05/2012 10:40

Have you tried advocate? your vet can sell it to you. I find it more effective than frontline.

I buy indorex at Asda.

CMOTDibbler · 02/05/2012 10:43

Stronghold is the best drop on imo - one of our old cats was a complete flea bag in spite of Frontline. We changed to Stronghold, smoke bombed the house, and never had a flea after that. Several cats further on, and as long as we use Stronghold are flea free, but if we are lazy and go to Frontline they appear

I am another one recommending the newest kid on the flea block Seresato collar works for 8 months.
