Lizard

My DD is desperate for a small lizard. We are not really pet people (we have a goldfish!)

Does anyone know how much looking after they take? I'm worried the novelty will wear off and she won't look after it.

We can't have any furry animals due to allergies.

They are difficult to care for!

Once the tank is set up (which is expensive) plus heat mat, substrate, climbing plants etc, you'll need to ensure they get the right balance of food plus calcium supplement.

If anything goes wrong you'll need a specialised reptile vet as most vets won't know how to treat them IME.

They're also fairly long lived so be prepared for a long term commitment!

I had anoles (a type of small chameleon) and they were hard work - need checking every day to ensure they've eaten enough, that the temperature is okay etc) but were fascinating to watch!

They're also not a 'cuddly' pet and generally don't want to be handled too much. When they bite they hurt - they may not have teeth but can bruise.

It really depends on the age of your DD - if the novelty does wear off, would you be willing to take on the daily responsibility?

Why not see if you can take her to handle one at a zoo / pet shop? That way, she can have a 'taster'? Or adopt one from a zoo?

Thanks for your reply. I told her all this.... She bought an iPod touch with her money instead!
