seriously considering getting a greyhound but We have a cat who is approximately 10 years old and 2 children 2 & 4.

We would get one tomorrow if it wasn't for the cat and I just wondered how you cat test a dog or if anyone had any helpful information regarding my situation please :) ?

I think if you get a greyhound you will soon have an ex-cat.

Oh :( that's fine by me it's DH's cat!

I also have a hankering for a greyhound, Lovely breed. We have 3 very naughty scratchy cats. Aged 3-5.
Not sure who would come off worse!

I'll take your cat if someone will take this bloody rabbit off my hands!

I have a cat, we've had her six years.

Three years ago we got a greyhound. Rgt were really good and the rescue recommend a particular greyhound as they said they didn't think she would chase cats. I bought the dog home for a day visit and to see how they got on. Cat was a bit pissed off but dog ignored her.

Dog came to live. We then got another cat who the dog also ignores apart from a bit of bum licking.

So it is a possibility, that's what I needed to hear thanks viva. They're such lovely dogs, does yours have a good temperament and how much walking does it need?

Before you do get a greyhound can I just warn you that our cat got ripped to pieces by a greyhound that was walking past our house Sad

VivaLeBeaver · 18/02/2012 08:35

Flabber, sorry about your cat. The majority of greyhounds aren't cat friendly but there are quite a few that aren't. The owners of that one should have had it under control on a lead and ideally muzzled to prevent such an incident.

My dog is very safe with all small furry things, squirrels, chickens, cats. Doesn't other about them. She's very laid back. I walk her for 90 minutes every week day morning, less at weekends. They don't need that much though, guidelines are 2 x 20min walks a day. Mine has only been for one walk all week as I've been unwell but she isn't fussing to go out. She just sleeps all the time!

My friend has just got a rescue greyhound and he is now happily living with her cat at home. They introduced them to each other and the dog never batted an eyelid. The cat was a bit pissed off for a few days but all is well now.

It's worth a try!

cantpooinpeace · 18/02/2012 08:50

This is good news, think were gonna go to the rescue centre in a few weeks. It's good to know it can happen though. Thanks MNers :)

Thanks viva.

The dog was on a lead with the owner but didn't have a muzzle on.
The owner showed no remorse or anything.
So Sad

VivaLeBeaver · 18/02/2012 08:58

It's terrible that he didn't stop the dog, you'd have thought he'd have been able to yank it back.

I foster for Kent Greyhound Rescue and they cat test their greyhounds and lurchers, I know quite a few people who have a cat and a greyhound, and some other fosterers who have cats too. My lurcher actually came from a foster home that had a cat, but when we are out and she sees a cat she will try and pull me off my feet to get to the cat! My friends Shit-tzu is the same though, lives with a cat but if he sees one out will chase it. Whereabouts are you, anywhere near Kent?

fluffygal · 18/02/2012 09:38

Also a lot of rescues don't like rehoming to houses with small children but Kent Greyhound Rescue are fine with it (with the right dog), mine were 6 months, 3,4,4 and 5 when we got our lurcher and greyhound and like I said we foster too so get new dogs staying all the time! Male greyhounds especially are lazy and sleep most of the day and they are just an easy, child friendly breed.

m.facebook.com/kentgreyhoundrescue1?refid=17 here is their facebook page if you fancy a look! They have just had 25 dogs arrive so lots to choose from!

cantpooinpeace · 18/02/2012 10:42

I'm in Lancashire I think our nearest one is ormskirk, gonna go take a look we think after we've been away in a few weeks.

Ooooooo do post and tell us if you got/get a greyhound. We had our old boy for 4 years but I would never have let him near a cat! He died on ds's due date... Very sad times. Would do anything for another rescued grey but Dh wants to do babies first. Sad
Am working on convincing him with smaller varieties like bunnies but I'm not winning
