DD has an ageing dwarf hamster, we have had her for nearly 4 years now. She was one of a pair of sisters and the other died some 18 months ago.
Now she is clearly on her last legs and DD is having bad dreams about the hamster dying and is getting upset. The hamster has, understandably, slowed down a lot in recent months and can be easily picked up and stroked rather than caught when she was running round. She has lost a lot of weight and I have noticed (today) that she can no longer open one of her eyes and is stumbling around the cage on wobbly legs and can now only eat the smaller pieces of food. I have been cutting up the bigger pieces for her.
She can still drink from her water bottle and is drinking; the water levels are going down and she can get water out of it still.
Should I let nature take it's course (which I think is imminent) or should I pay a visit to the vet and ask the vet to end her suffering?
