I have a male cat and a female cat both from kittens, Nemo (the male) doesn't sit on my lap, he just sleeps alot and costs me a fortune at the vets lol. Dory (female) is nuts and runs about the house, playing, she loves sitting on my lap and is very friendly.

biglips · 16/01/2006 09:20

so can all males stray even if castrated and females stay at home?

OP posts:
sparklymieow · 16/01/2006 09:24

Nemo did wander a bit, he isn't castrated YET!! (he is going in soon) but since he has been ill, he hasn't been going out much. My other male cat (Storm) did wander a bit (used to see him up the road) and he disappeared in august Dory sit in the garden and doesn't go out much, and when she does, she comes back in within minutes

I think they all have their own perosnality -- all my male cats have been very friendly and loving (more to me tha dh though)

the only female cat I ever had was very unfriendly

Prettybird · 16/01/2006 09:44

Males do wander a bit further (even if neutered): apprarently they have a range of 1.5 miles, whereas a female has a range of only 0.5 miles.

In Siamese cats (which is my only epxerience), the females tend to be slightly less "cuddly" than the males. But it is only averages/tendencies: so you could easily get an extremely affectionate female or a stand-off-ish female.

magnolia1 · 16/01/2006 16:04

I have 1 male and 1 female, our male is a bit more of a home cat but doesn't like cuddles, our female wanders a bit more but loves cuddles. It really doesn't matter, you will not know how they will turn out till they grow up a bit.

NomDePlume · 16/01/2006 16:13

Get a female, males spray and can still continue to do so if neutered and it stinks!! Females cost more to neuter, but worth it in the long run!

Jodee · 16/01/2006 16:35

We've just acquired a male and a female aged
6 months. Only had them a week, but so far the male is much more placid, the female is a complete nutcase! We thought we may as well get 2 kittens if we are going to get any at all, they are good company for each other.

biglips · 16/01/2006 16:57

if i wants 2 kittens, what is best, one girl and one boy? etc!

It's swings and roundabouts really. Neutered toms generally don't spray and are often very affectionate lapcats, but they do still roam around a lot and have huge territories. Neutered females can still be the dominant cat in a territory if there aren't many males around so may still fight. Females tend to be better hunters than males, and more interested in catching birds and mice.

Those are generalisations though; some neuters still spray, some still fight, some are hopeless hunters. It depends as much on the nature of the cat as it does on anything else. My cat is a neutered female and doesn't wander far, has a small territory, is frightened of her own shadow, and is a hopeless hunter. The neutered female next door is a wanderer, goes missing overnight sometimes, would fight anything that moves, and hunts squirrel as well as birds. Her neutered brother is a big fat soft old lapcat who can scarcely be bothered to move, apart from walking around his territory twice a day to make sure it's all still there.

biglips · 16/01/2006 20:30

ok.....

so it is best to get 1 male and 1 female (same litter) or 1 females or 2 males? (meaning does 2 females get on better together than males)

Doesn't make much difference - and depends on the cats anyway. It's a bit pot luck as to what kind of temperament you get.

Your best bet is to go and see the kittens without having any fixed ideas of what you want. See how they interact with each other, see how bright and alert they seem, and chose the two that you like regardless of what sex they are. There's no real right or wrong, and there's no magic combination either because cats are as individual as people. Just go and see them, and see which ones you like.

biglips · 16/01/2006 20:37

WigWamBam - thanks as im now happy and know whats to look for as in your previous comments. i will go and see them and go from there

Do you know how much the microchipped cost?

OP posts:
biglips · 16/01/2006 20:38

plus thanks everyone too

OP posts:
Prettybird · 17/01/2006 08:56

IIRC, chipping costs c.£50 - but that's for life.

Agree with WWB about the variations between cats: even if the sexes do have tendencies, the variation in individau cats can outweigh that.

Very much agree that you should go along without any preconceptions and see which of the kittens "feel" right and how they interct with you and each other. You may well find that you get chosen by the cat!

Prettybird · 17/01/2006 09:35

Actually - that was probably for two cats.

WigWamBam · 17/01/2006 10:22

Prettybird is quite right ... you are likely to be chosen by the cats. We were! Just go with what feels right.

biglips · 17/01/2006 10:40

is there anything ive missed out??

OP posts:
snowleopard · 17/01/2006 11:02

I think male cats' wee is smellier - even if neutered.
