We want two obviously!

How much would you say the start up costs for guinea pigs are? (cage/food etc)

You can expect to pay around 10.00 for a guinea pig.

Then you need a bottle each, these are usually 99p each.

Food for the month is 8.00 a bag, the best one for them is Supa Guinea Excel and you can usually get this from pet shops or vets.

Straw for them to sleep on and eat.

Shavings for them to play on.

Have some fresh oranges, celery, apple, parsley, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots (every other day)

You can also give them bits of banana occasionally, don't give them potatoes as they are far too starchy.

Also, when you get them, you will have to check them for mites, they are very very small and when you part their fur they bury under the fur, the vet will give you some drops and once they have been applied they are all gone within an hour. These mites are species born, which means that they cannot be passed onto humans or any other animals.

If you are going to keep them outside (though having them inside can increase their life expectancy by 2-3 years and also reduce the risk of then getting respiratory probvlems), you must put them in a hutch on legs and make sure that you have a cover to keep the wind rain off etc, if you can't keep them indoors, but have a shed or garage (unused garage) that would be ideal.

Any more questions, please shout and i'll be happy to help

If you look in the free ad paper there are usually hundreds of 2 hand cages and runs for sale.. looking back we brought a new hutch.. and I don't know why!! it cost a bloody fortune..

We brought our hutch, guinea pigs and run from a pet shop... guinea pigs I think were £17 pound each.. the run cost about £40 I would recommend a seperate run... get a metal one if you can...
the wooden ones are a bit flimsy!

Good luck... they are lovely little creatures,

They will be inside we won't have a garden I imagine. Are the cages ok to keep them in?
Thanks for the kind offer Missdee but we are way up north in Hull so a bit too far!

Is it ok to get them from a pet shop.

Are they fairly low maintence, me and my dp want some pets and like the idea of guinea pigs, I have held them before and they seem very tame and friendly. I have had cats and hamsters before will that prepare me enough?

We got ours from Pets at Home and they are lovely. It was summer and difficult to find any at all. They are brothers and get on fine but I think females are better together if you have a choice.

& £15 voucher available!

RSPCA always have rabbits and guinea pigs for adoption.

We got ours from a breeder (he shows them as a hobby) for £5 each. He said that is the going rate for a boar. They were £16 in the pet shop!
