Does anyone have a diabetic dog?

I am beginning to think my dog is diabetic. He is 12 years old and has recently lost weight. He is boney and his spine shows clearly His food has been increased but he is still constantly scavanging for food around the kids.

The past 2 or 3 days, he keeps weeing and his water bowl always seems to be empty so we keep re-filling it.

Do you think it could be diabetes or just old age?

No. But I have a diabetic husband. Do you think I could get him put down?

kid · 11/01/2006 20:56

LOL, you could take him to a vet on a lead and see what they say!

Hi kid, no diabetic dog, but a diabetic cat if that helps at all? She was peeing in her litter cupboard but out of her tray, which is why we took her to the vet. With hindsight, she was also drinking loads of water but we didn't realise until after she was diagnosed. She gets two meals per day and after she has eaten she is injected with insulin. She's been on the insulin for about 3 months now and we have noticed a massive difference in her so if you're worried, you should get your dog checked. She was actually over rather than under weight though.

If only it was that easy.
Sorry to spoil you're thread slightly.
From what I know (very little) I think it's daily injections.

We had a diabetic dog when I was at university - my mum discovered he was diabetic because he was drinking so much water, then weeing everywhere at night because he couldn't wait to go out, then the floor was all sticky in the morning because the wee contained so much sugar!

My mum had pet plan and she reckons his treatment would have cost thousands if they had had to pay for it themselves.

kid · 11/01/2006 21:09

Luckily we are registered with PDSA so we will only have to pay a donation. I'll phone to see if we can get an appointment.

Any news on you're pooch?
Will it have to be a substantial donation?

kid · 12/01/2006 20:39

He didn't wee on the floor at all today so now I'm not as convinced as I was yesterday. I wanted to leave him over the weekend and phone them on Monday if it conitinued.

A few years ago, he had to have a couple of operations due to being attacked by another dog. We donated on every single visit, not sure of the exact cost but it was definately over £100 in total. I know its no where near what a vet would charge but its what we could afford, some people don't leave any donation at all.

The PDSA have started to put names on the donations envelope they give you when you arrive. They can check who doesn't donate, I think thats a good idea and should be enough to shame people to leave something, however little.

I don't mind giving to charity but would feel obliged to if my name was on an envelope.

I'm still monitoring him. He wee'd once on the floor today, and is still constantly begging, scavanging for food. I want to get some worm treatment for him too, he is well over due that.

He doesn't seem as bad as he did a few days ago. He is drinking at least 2 bowls of water a day. He is a medium sized Yorkie, not sure how much water a dog is meant to drink.

thanks for the advice oops, I started measuring how much water I put down for him. So far he is on to his 2nd lot of 200ml's. I'll see how much he has drank after 24 hours and then I will weigh him.

OP posts:
kid · 16/01/2006 20:19

He drank 450mls in 24hours and he weighs 5.6 kilos. So it is a large amount of water he is drinking, (unless I worked it out completely wrong!)

We have finally booked an appointment for him this Wednesday. So we will just have to wait and see now.

Good luck kid. Let us know what happens. My ds was diagnosed with diabetes just before christmas and the good news is that he's looking so much fitter and healthier since he started on insulin.

kid · 10/02/2006 22:50

My 2 year old nephew has been for blood tests today to see if he has diabetes. I think I remember reading a little bit about your son, I'll go and check for it now to save asking more questions about him here.

I'll let you know how the dog gets on.

Good luck to both dog and nephew kid.

Spidermama · 13/02/2006 11:55

Any news on your nephew or your dog kid?

kid · 13/02/2006 22:24

I think the dog is okay, but we will take him to the vets on Wed anyway, he has an appointment for 10:45

My sister thought her DS's blood test results would be back within 6 weeks but I think it will be much quicker than that. The reason he was sent for a blood test is that he drinks so much. He also kept telling my sister that he couldn't see and she read that blurred vision is also a sign of diabetes. The good thing so far is, when the Dr tested his urine, there was no sugar present but they need to do a blood test to know for sure.

back from the vets. The dog doesn't have diabetes, he needs to go back on Monday to have blood tests done as he is showing signs of kidney failure but they won't know for certain until the blood results are back (should be back by thursday)
He also has blood in his urine, they have put him on pencillin until the blood test.

Got the results back from the vets, it turns out our dog is aneamic! He is on a course of Vitamin B and has to have a good quilaty meat in his diet.
