how was your dog when you were in labour

anyone got any experience of this? i am hoping for a home birth any day now, and was wondering how my dog will be. she is very close to me, and likes to be with me as much as possible, although sleeps in her own bed in the kitchen at night. i wonder if she will know i'm in labour? or if she'll be even more attentive? i don't want her with me in the second stage from the hygeine point of view, but i think she'll be a comfort in the first stage.

i'd love to hear about your experience of this.

My dog was aware that something was up during my home birth, but was not too bothered. He just sat close when I was downstairs. I went upstairs for the second stage and I made sure that when I first saw him after the birth, I lavished attention on him so he would not get jealous (no chance he is so used to sharing me with the kids!)
The cats were worse! One of them sat on my head when I was pushing!!!
Good luck!

just can't imagine the sitting on your head thing whilst you were pushing!! did someone push him / her off?

my cat is not remotely affectionate, so can't imagine her wanting to be close. my dog is very affectionate and i can imagine her wanting to be very close.

she has been done and has never had pups.

asleep. and completely disinterested in the baby once born, gave him a sniff or two and hardly looked at him again.

she was a 2 yr old female unspayed standard poodle.

she has been great ever since - he learnt to stand up by grabbing the loose skin on her back and hauling himself to his feet - she would just stand there rolling her eyes and never once moved until he had sat down and let go again. Then she'd bolt to safety!

My dogs went ballistic.
Pacing up and down all night, whinging and whining, just like me in fact!

I will qualify this by saying that my labour was superfast, I wasn't at all noisy and they were right at the other end of the house (and upstairs where they aren't allowed to go). If it had been a 12 hr marathon downstairs with a lot of whooping and hollering maybe she would have taken more interest!
