Hi,

I bought a cavalier king charles spaniel pup 3 days ago, a little blenheim girl, she is 11 weeks old. I am using a crate at night as i don't really want to give her the run of the house but the past 2 nights she has soiled her cage. I am not paper training as such as i have been told that when you do this you are really teaching the pup that its ok to do its business in the house. So we are taking her out into the garden at regular intervals to releive herself, she has seemed to understand that she has to pee when she is out although it does take a little time but when it comes to pooing she just does'nt seem to get it! We spent over an hour in the garden last night waiting for her to poo with no luck nd eventually we gave in, it was very cold outside and i worry about her catching a chill. Anyway we put her to bed around 12ish and she cried and barked and whined on and off all night, we did'nt go to her as i don't want to reinforce this behaviour by giving her attention. I am worried that my neighbours might start to complain though!
When i went to her this morning she had peed and pood in her bed, i do put newspaper at the back of her cage just in case and she did manage to go mainly on that. When she saw me she was so excited and when i took her outside she would'nt leave my side so did'nt pee or poo.

Just hoping that someone with experience will be able to give me some advice re housetraining and the noise she is making at night. This morning i just felt like giving her away, i know its early days and i need to be patient but i just don't know if i'm going about it the right way. I really want to be able to see this through.

Any advice gratefully received,
Thanks.

Hi, cant give you any advice as such, but just to let you know that you are not alone. we have just got a west highland white terrier, 10 weeks old. she has also barked, whinged and whined all night. we went down to her last night and told her NO firmly and put her back in her bed, it seemed to work. we have also given her a teddy. our problem at the moment is that she has worms. we have wormed her but she has diaroheah. we are using puppy pads in the kitchen where she sleeps. these are inpregnated with a smell which attracts her to do her business on, and she does seem to be using it. we could keep each other company whilst getting through this cos i also wanted to give her away today.

I promise it will get better!!!

I have a year old staffie X springer and a 5 month old staffie puppy. Mine are both crate trained but I have to say at 1st they will cry and although going to them does reinforce it if they are crying because they need the toilet ignoring them is not fair

Puppies will wee really often during the day. At night a tiny puppy will need to go out to the toilet at least a couple of times. It is like having a baby, they will eventually go longer and Maisie who is now 5 months has gone all night since a month ago.
I have even slept in the kitchen on a duvet so she would sleep

When your puppy cries ignore it if it is when you have just put her to bed but if she cries a few hours later it is probably because she wants the toilet. She will probably cry again when you leave her but eventually she will get used to it.

A teddy is a great idea and a radio on low also helps

I recommend you post your question on this site:

dogpages.org.uk (in their forums)

You will get loads of really excellent advice.

Yes radio on low is excellent idea - we have always left radio on low when we had dogs previously - in fact I leave on for my cat too if I am out

Hi and thanks to everyone who replied, sorry its taken me a while to get back but i've been busy and had a few things going on.

Things seem to be improving and she only barks and cries for a little while now and tends to sleep all night, there has been the occassional wet bed but she has'nt messed in it for about 2 weeks now.

Hi dizzy34,
how are things going with your pup? It is so hard to keep positive and persevere but i'm glad that i did'nt give in and give her away cos she really is a little sweetie. She has had her vaccinations and we've taken her out for a couple of walks amd she has been so good. We are taking her to puppy training classes, which she does need as she thinks she can do anything she pleases and does'nt particularly like being told no! but she is learning and she will sit on command. I hope things have improved with you too.

Hope to hear from you soon,

Tracey
