Why do our goldfish keep dying?

Another one died this morning - they are all "going" the same way too - one minute they are fine and full of energy, next minute they are swimming on their sides, with the tail drooping down (so that they look like they are bent in half) then they just die. One died this morning - we've only had it a couple of weeks.

They get fed every day, tiny amounts of food, like the lady in the shop told us to. The tank is clean and has a water filter and pump thing, so I'm really puzzled. Would buy a book about goldfish (if there is such a thing?!) but we live in Holland and I don't speak Dutch!

Any idea what could be causing them to die like this?

Is the water tap water?

I've had my fish for 8 years and the everything in the tank is coated with algae!

Exactly the same thing happened to me - one after another they all died, despite following instructions. I gave up in the end!

My post sounded a bit cryptic.... what I mean is mine seem to last forever despite the tank not being very clean.

And the tapwater may have chemicals in it that are killing them.

How long do they normally last for? Have you tried changing the water?

air fresheners and cleaning fluid
can affect fish
seen this on "how clean is your house"

Overfeeding, easy to do,creates too much poo and therefore the water has too many toxins that cant be broken down.
too little oxygen, have you got plants? is the water too warm, tank near a radiator.
Maybe the tank is too clean? A residual of bacteria should be left in the tank gravel. I wish this might help.I've had 5 goldfish in 2 months (admittedly in a bog standard bowl- no filter?pump). On monday a different pet shop lady(to ashamed to go back to the first place)sold me pond weed, nutrafin fish bowl cleaner, bioactive tapsafe and a new fish called Lucky. Good luck .

Yes, it's just tap water in the tank. The tank has been cleaned once in the 2-3 months we've had it. It's not close to a radiator but the house is quite a warm house anyway. There's no plant in it now but we did have one to start with which was when they were all fine. I think we had the one which lasted the longest for about 6 weeks or so. Am going to wait and see what happens with the two remaining fish (the newest ones, which are about a month old). Have told DH we are not replacing any more until they've all gone and then we can start again! DDs don't seem too bothered by the fact that 5 fish have very quickly become 2, which is probably just as well!! Thanks for your help and advice ladies!

the kids aren't slipping anything else in the tank are they? cause my naughty ss and his friend killed my mates fish, popping a bit of rice in the tank for it at a party at their house, fish went 'oh yummy different food' then died a day later........ss used his pocket money to get them a new fish......
