Next door to us have 1 dog,but also look after their daughters dog during the day. They are no trouble at all,but recently, they have added a puppy to the family-he is about 4 months old & at first didn't used to be left with the other two.

He is now here every day & is very excitable & if he sees or hears any of us in the garden, goes wild, barking & flinging himself against the fence.

It might seem trivial, but in our last house,we had to put up with a neighbours dogs doing this from 7am til 10pm every day for years & we were so relieved to escape from it.I'm dreading getting into the same situation again, where I avoid letting the dd's play in the garden because of the bedlam the dog causes.

We are on good terms with our neighbour & she did come outside the other day to see what he was barking at & I explained that he didn't seem to like me much! She commented that he barks a lot, told him off & went back in.

I'm hoping he will get used to us & calm down eventually.I do make a point of going out in the garden as often as I can,in the hope that he'll get used to seeing me & the girls & not bother so much.

Should I ignore him? I get the feeling that he is barking out of excitement & that if I go & 'make friends' with him,he'll get more excited & get worse.

I'd be really grateful for any advice.
Thanks

he's still a puppy and will probably calm down. Almost certainly best to ignore him rather than befriend him. If you befriend him he'll associate you coming into your garden with being made a fuss of - so will be more likely to get excited.

he'll grow out of it. but bear in mind he will be putting off burglars as well so think of him as cheap home protection for the moment!

My mother used to direct the garden hose towards the noise while "watering" the hedge... Problem is you can get the neighbours wet if you don't pay enough attention.

Just ignore it - it's still a baby.

Mirage · 14/12/2005 22:11

He may not grow out of it!! We have a dog who barks at our neighbour and I am convinced it's because she doesn't like him. Don't blame her coz he is a complete pain in the arse who whistles from morning till night and sings from 6am in the garden Would be ok if he COULD sing!!

He tries to talk to our dog over the fence and it makes her so much worse. She doesn't really bark at the other side so she obviously sees something she doesn't like

Sorry that doesn't help you at all does it

My neighbour has two small dogs(not puppies),who are left in the garden all day while they are at work.In the Summer they started barking whenever I was in the garden, they know us, but are not very friendly dogs so I woulden't dare go to the fence.
In the end I got so fed up of it I used to squirt then with my DS's Mega waterpistol every time they started. They soon got the message

Chandra, we tried that as our neighbours dog barks if we go out in the garden.

trouble is, it loved it and tried to drink it all!
