Next door's cat got it. It has an injured (not broken) wing. It's going to the vets in the morning.

It needs a name. Ideas please.

Grin brilliant

Jux · 26/06/2011 14:13

Thanks for the link HellyMelly. Looks like jackdaws are smaller and smoother.... this thread reminded me of a book of my grandmother's, The jackdaw of Reims.

LongWayRound · 26/06/2011 14:42

Thanks for updating with Mortimer's progress! I love the thought of not Giving Him Ideas... you can't be too careful.

edam · 26/06/2011 14:44
Grin

Ravens are supposed to be extremely clever... he might get those ideas anyway without any help from Hitchcock!

SarahStratton · 26/06/2011 16:15

Mortimer has persuaded me that he needs a paddling pool. He is now marching round the garden, occasionally stopping to splash about in an old meat tray the beef came in.

He looks very wet and very happy.

Me, I am melting.

Awww - he's really fallen on his feet!

happymole · 26/06/2011 17:03

Sod Mortimer

Please adopt me instead Sarah

HazeltheMcWitch · 26/06/2011 19:44

So Mortimer did indeed have weekend plans! Not sure if the idea of the DVD (providing Ideas), or the the paddling pool, or the personally-shot rabbits bemused me more.

Trouble is I don't believe a WORD of it Wink, and therefore demand pictures, especially of a wet Mortimer enjoying his beefy bathe. Please.

SarahStratton · 26/06/2011 21:41

Pics of Mortimer on my profile Grin

I go away for a day and Mortimer gets up to all sorts. Will you be loaning him out for weeding Sarah - my patio could do with some attention.

Grin at 'The Birds' DVD.

Love the idea of him with his own paddling pool. He'd probably enjoy a slide and a swing too Grin

HazeltheMcWitch · 27/06/2011 19:39

But I want to see pictures of Mortimer in his paddling pool !

He is very lovely, SarahS. And I am very jealous.

SarahStratton · 27/06/2011 21:31

Ahh, I will do my best over the next couple of days then :)

We want new pics, pleeease.

lubeybooby · 28/06/2011 11:30

What a brilliant thread, this has cheered me up no end. Should definitely go into classics! Mortimer is fab. Like happymole, I too want to be adopted :o

SarahStratton · 30/06/2011 08:37

Sorry, I've not been at home. But don't worry, Mortimer is being beautifully cared for by the DDs. He is being very demanding, apparently. DD1 gave him some strawberries, an egg and some minced lamb for breakfast yesterday. Last night she gave him cat food and he promptly turned his bowl over and stomped off. I think he may be ever so slightly spooky Grin

He ate the cat food eventually, after a half hour sulk and a lecture from DD2 about how fortunate he is.

Will take some more photos today. It has been very odd not to have a small, scruffy umbrella bird following me around.

SarahStratton · 30/06/2011 08:39

That's spoiled, not spooky. Damn iPhone thinks it's smarter than me. It's not.

ExitPursuedByAKitten · 30/06/2011 19:04

Did wonder about the spooky Grin

chocolateyclur · 02/07/2011 00:31

I want one! Found a bay blackbird once, but that's not the same. Envy

Taghain · 05/07/2011 09:45

How's the bird, Sarah? Any more news?

SarahStratton · 09/07/2011 23:57

Hi Taghain, he's doing well. Wings are getting stronger and stronger and he can 'fly' about 2 feet now. I've cut contact down to a minimum and he now spends the day in the garden, which is safe and enclosed. If I go out he goes back in his run, but apart from that he is free range.

Lack of contact seems to be working, he is much shyer of me and will 'help' in the garden, but at a distance now.

He needs to grow his tail back. All of his tail feathers were pulled out by the dogs. He also needs to regrow his flight feathers as half of these were pulled out and the other half had to be trimmed for the splint.

Once he has moulted and got his new feathers I expect him to fly. I plan to leave his run open for him and to feed him for as long as he wants. But if he can go back to the wild it would be wonderful.

winnybella · 10/07/2011 00:44

Don't they need company though? Will he be ok without any/not much interaction til his feathers grow back?

SarahStratton · 12/07/2011 14:41

Lots of crows are visiting the garden, and I do go out and sit with him for a couple of hours every day. I just don't want him getting tame enough for it to cause problems if he can go back to the wild.

Actually, the garden seems to have become the local crow drop in centre. He's a raven, but I guess they are understanding each other.

ExitPursuedByAGryffin · 19/07/2011 16:56

Just wondered how Mortimer is doing Sarah? Are Ravens bigger than crows. I have just come back from a week in Cornwall and there were literally hundreds of crows/rooks/ravens, and some of them were bloody enormous.

Hope he is doing well.

SarahStratton · 02/08/2011 18:36

He's doing well. He has lots of new feathers growing in to replace those he lost in his dog fight. Ravens are lots bigger than crows, he's the size of a small cat now, and eats just as much. About a can and a half of cat food a day. Confused

He's also rather cross with me because I've been moving stuff around in the garden. He doesn't seem to approve much.

ExitPursuedByAGryffin · 02/08/2011 23:11

Glad to hear he is still recovering.
