Puppy Questions

Hello

I have a 4 month old cairn puppy and can't get my head round how much I should be feeding him according to the packets.

He has two meals of dry food which he barely touches and two meals of meat food mixed with dry. I've been giving him about half or three quarters of the 150g meat pedigree puppy packet each feed.

I'm concerned that I'm either starving him or making him into a fattie! Grateful for any tips. Thanks.

We were advised to feed our cocker spaniel (4 months) 20 grams of dried complete food mixed with a small portion of meat. The pedigree puppy packet should be about a third each feed. And this should be 3 meals a day although I have put it down to two and increased the dried food portion to 30g.

It doesn't look alot but if they are pooing roughly 5 times a day that is about right for them!

It all depends on the dog I used to mix the wet and dry food together to insure the puppy eat it and... he spat out the dry bits! (hilarious! not pleased with that but I never thought dogs could spit! )

The only thing I could recomend is to feed him the same food every time, other wise he will leave behind the least attractive food). Try to have him weighted in next visit to vet, and adapt the quantity of food accordingly.

can't answer as we fed our mongrel lab puupy anything from rice pudding and spaghetti hoops to hot dog sausages.

blimey Helsi... I wouldn't fancy picking up the mess that would create at the "wrong end"

Chandra.. an ex BF of mine had a blind labrador. The family's left over sunday lunch always used to get scraped into her bowl, and she still managed to spit out the peas

Boobum.... No advice on amounts but try and get your puppy onto a biscuit only diet eventually - much better for their teeth. I know a lot of dogs who "woof" down the Bakers complete.

Agree about the dry food, it will take it a while to eat it regularly (until he realises there's nothing rlse to eat), but after that it gets better. We fed our dogs IAMS, it seemed more expensive than the others, but it worked out cheaper as they needed to have a smaller amount. And... one of the best kept secrets about it is that it reduces significantly the amount of clean up afterwards.

IT's true, I'm not going to describe it but, definitively less yukky than with other brands.

It was in their advertisement when they launched the product
