We looked into having a husky. Apparently they don't like things that scurry (like smaller animals) and are great escape artists. They need high fencing that is also buried into the ground several feet because they can dig. We didn't think we could cope with one, and didn't have toddlers. Best of luck.

laurenholly · 05/11/2005 22:19

i know iv told him that he did save up for one at 1 time but luckly he changed his mind but keep saying he would like one
and they also lose the hair in big chucks
there lovely looking dogs one of the best around so are boxers

My aunt used to have a husky bitch. The dog was lovely - very affectionate and protective.

You have to brush them, obviously, but if you are nutty enough, you can spin the fur that you collect and knit things, apparently...

laurenholly · 05/11/2005 22:25

ok then but im not old so wont knit :O

I used to know someone who kept huskies for showing. She couldn't keep them in the house because it was too warm and ruined their coats.

Oh, and I have always knitted and I am not THAT old! (never dog hair though I must admit).

Chandra · 06/11/2005 01:04

I knew one whose owner knitted jumpers out of the hair it dropped, it was the fluffiest thing ever (and the biggest one as well). It really made the suburban huskys look pretty lame (I saw this dog near Alska so, guess it was cold enough to keep his coat at his best )

Boxers are said to be wonderful with children.

laurenholly · 06/11/2005 21:06

pixel i know not all people who knit are old but im only 21

DH wanted one - we rang a breeder who said they need 3 mile walks a day, cost £1200, and we'd have to go on a waiting list and be fully vetted - tbh once we'd heard the price we weren't as intrested - not meaning that to sound bad but we can't afford £1200 for a dog. besides which we were both working and knew for a fact we wouldn't be able to give that breed of dog all he requires by way of walks etc esp as our areas are limited, and he couldn't have a good enough run - at least that's how we felt.

Boxers are also v nice - v v cute as pups, but not had one.

laurenholly · 06/11/2005 21:13

Sorry but thats rubbish they do not cost £1200 you can get them for about £500-600

I love boxer dogs and would love another bitch. Well, actually I'd love a boxer cross as they're so prone to illness I think that'd make it stronger?

Don't know much about huskies though?

laurenholly · 06/11/2005 21:15

nor do i know much about huskys about from u need high fences and need long walks and dont like hot weather

i know boxers dont live long have you had 1?

shouldn't be husky's be kept in cooler climates ? I always feel I want to unzip their coats when I see them in summer.

TBH I wouldn't get any dog with young children/toddlers/babies.

ThomCat · 06/11/2005 21:20

Siberian husky - Adult dogs may tend to be reserved with an unmistakably dignified air. Gentle & alert, these are agreeable, tractable companions. Quick & light on his feet, med sized working dog, weight 35-60 pounds height 50-60 cm

Boxer - refined mastiff type, self confident & proud, has a cocky way, many love him, some fear him. Boxer can guard well and conquer many obedience tasks. fine companion who can be trusted always. Height 57-64 cms, weight 53-71 pounds.

I had a boxer, he was amazing, best dog ever.
He was amazing with children, which is a reputation many a boxer has. He was great fun and loved to play but was also so gentle and so loving and soppy. Would bark like mad if my boyfriend at the time pretended to have a play fight or anything, if you played tug with him with rope or a stick if he felt your hand on his gums at any point he'd drop the rope/stick etc. He hated his ears being pulled and if kids tugged them he'd just creep away under the table for a bit. ohhhh he was amazing, I'd massively reccomend a boxer. I also used to walk my neighbours 2 boxers and they were the same, not quite as lovely obviously as they weren't mine!

Ulysees · 06/11/2005 21:20

yes and she had cancer 3 times, last time got her She was 9. Amazing she got so far though as she first had it at 3.

Do you know that you can't let huskies off the lead ever outside. They will have absolutly no inclination to come back to you.

They don't have to have long walks everyday, they would be used to being snowed in for days and will be quite content, but will need serious runs in between.

You really have to do serious research before getting either kind. Try for huskies Try tracking down an owner to chat to even on a forum for more info.

laurenholly · 06/11/2005 22:01

no i didnt know that but thanks for that

My best friend's family has always had boxers as they have such lovely natures. When I first knew her she had a bitch, who was the soppiest dog I ever knew. She wouldn't hurt a fly, yet she used to scare off burglars (they live in a remote place so used to get many attempted break-ins).
They now have a dog who came from a rescue home, having been badly treated. He is, um, shall we say a bit of a handful, which is probably a mixture of the ill-treatment and the fact that he's un-neutered. He's very strong and heavy and likes to stand up on his back legs to lick your face. It has to be said that my dses are terrified of him, but only because they're only used to our pussycat and PIL's little dog.
Dog also has a rubber fetish and likes to, ahem, pleasure himself on wellies!
Overall, I think boxers are great, and I'd happily have one, but preferably a bitch for temperament.
Don't know about huskies, I'm afraid, but they'd look great with a sled in the winter!

MamaG · 06/11/2005 22:13

Why don't you both agree to disagree - and get a labrador . They're fantastic with kids.

But so are all the Boxers I've ever know too!

Guess what breed of dog I've got
