Lilibet - you can buy aquariums like that fully equipped with everything you need to start with, except the fish. I've had my goldfish for 9 YEARS NOW!!!!! The bloody thing will out live me.

PetsAtHome Website

Here is a basic starter kit. There are loads here from £29 to £300! Take your pick.

Barbs, Algae Eaters, Shubs.... LOADS! As long as they can swim fast enough then you should be fine. Probably best not to mix fantails with black mollies for example..... black mollies swim very slowly.

Two websites that give good advise: www.thetropicalfishtank.co.uk and www.tropicalfish.com
Both these sites give advice about tropicals and cold water fish.

buy your fish from a place where the fish look healthy, not where there are any fish that look ill or any dead ones floating around. we saw this at petsathome. some in those tanks even looked like they had whitespot.

we have a 96 liter tank with glowlight tetras and golden zebra danios. the danios are really great fish, playful and hardy. they come up to the glass when you wiggle your fingers or when they see your face.

As of last Saurday we are the proud owners of 2 goldfish as a joint birthday present for DS (4) and DD (2) from their nanny (who has also promised to clean them out- result). They are called - and I am sure you will all be awestruck by my children's imagination - Nemo and Grommit. We've got the £29 variety of fish tank and it is absolutely fine - comes with a filter in the box and you could presumably get a light to go with it, hich I can't believe will be v expensive but you will need access to 2 power points. The goldfish seem cheerful and quite hardy and have learned not to flinch when DD goes and puts her head right next to the tank and bellows "Ello, fishy"
