Kittens weeing in wrong place. Help!

I have just got 2 kittens aged 13 weeks. I was told they were litter trained and they do use the litter tray, but they (or one of them - not sure which) also uses a dark corner of a little used room. I didn't realise this was happening regularly until today when dd went to get her coat and found it covered in wee and at least three different bowel movements! The carpet is soaked with wee. It is a really yucky situation! As I understand it, you have to stop the room smelling of wee/poo to prevent the cat using the area again but even after a good cleaning, I found one of them had pooed there again. Help! What should I do?

BTW, they are going to the vets tomorrow for their vaccinations so I will ask the vet too, but I would appreciate any earlier recommendations if you have any.

Apparently you should not clean it up with anything with Amonia in it cos this will attract them to pee there again.

No I have used wet wipes, bleach and carpet cleaner so far! Feel like nuking the room at the mo!

hi, the best solution to your problem is to put the litter tray where she is going to the toilet and if she is going in it gradually move it closer to where you want it over a period of time.
also when you see one of the kittens using the litter tray get the other one asap and show it what the other one is doing, they learn how to use a litter tray from their mum so they should copy one another.
hope this helps.

I wondered about moving the tray to the place where he/they were soiling. He/they was also taking advantage of doing their business behind some boxes we had stacked there so I have moved them and at the moment the carpet is up to allow the underlay to dry (it really was saturated! ) and there have been no further accidents there today since I did that. I have seen both of them using the tray today so I know they can do it. Why did one or both of them also do it in the other room I wonder? Is it true that one of them having made the mistake once, they will continue to wee/poo there if the smell of previous "doings" remains?

Don't use bleach, Lonelymum, as they will try to cover up the smell of it by weeing there even more. A biological washing powder is the best thing to clean up with, my vet said. Putting the tray in that place and then moving it gradually is a good idea, if they won't use the tray in the normal place. Good luck - it's hard work house-training pets!

oops re the bleach! I tend to over-react to these things and slop bleach everywhere! Yes, I didn't expect to have to do this, and so soon after getting my youngest out of nappies too! Still, at least I am not squeamish about picking up other's poos!

hi again, if you have seen both of them using the tray then it could generally be a mistake, remember how young they are they can not control their bladders like adult cats. also it could be likely that they are trying to mark their teritory and getting at a bit wrong, when they do this they are only supose to spray a tiny bit of urine and as they are so young and may not have seen their mother do it they could be getting too excited but this they will grow out of.
Aslo when you enpty their litter tray and put in clean litter you could also put in a tiny bit of the old litter so the smell to them is still there.

good luck

No mistake Jodie - there were 3 bowel movements and what seemed like about a pint of urine - dd's coat was dripping it everywhere! It is a waterproof coat and I think the urine had just been puddled into it although that doesn't explain the carpet underneath being soaked....

Aimsmum, got them on Thursday. They have been named Morty (Lord Voldemort from Harry Potter) and, as neither of them is really evil actually very friendly and affectionate, the other one is called Muffin. What is yours called?

Well Morty wee'd on my waterproof the first day we had him (I saw him do it but couldn't mve him anywhere). I thought it was just because it was a bit soft and felt right to him. I assumed he/they wee'd on dd's coat because it was in the same place (on the floor - we have no coat hooks yet!) but maybe there is something in the waterproofing that appeals to them.

Cuddles is a lovely name BTW. Just hope he lives up to it! Isn't it embarrassing when you have to say their name to the vet though? I rang up today to make appt for vaccines and had to give all their details to the woooman on the phone. When it came to names, i felt a bit foolish saying Morty and Muffin!

the vet told me that a cat would not soil any area where their food was. could you try that? (dont know if this applies to kittens btw)

Lonelymum · 28/09/2005 14:33

Well, went to the vet today and he ws not much use. More of less told me kittens would find their own place to wee and I would have to adapt to them! Huh! I have banned them from the offending room (after another turd appeared last night and caused an almighty set to between me and dh) and sprayed it with some stuff especially designed to disinfect the area and put them off re-soiling there. Hope that works.

Fortunately, the vet didn't call for Morty and Muffin but Mrs MyName!

i too am having the same problem as lonelymum i have two kittens 8 weeks old and both use litter tray, but one every so often is caught peeing in there basket. the advice i have been given by a freind who has cats is to rub there nose in it then place them in the litter tray, i however find this a bit wrong can anyone help me with this problem i am visting the vet on friday to give them there first jags so i can check with the vet then but would like a quick answer.

thanks

heavenis · 26/09/2006 10:58

What kind of cat litter are you using ? Sometimes litter like catsan (sp) can mask the smell too much for kittens to sence.

heavenis · 26/09/2006 11:01

I wouldn't rub the kittens nose in what they'd done. Keep taking them to the litter tray regularly
