Cat with blood in poo

We have a cat, who isn't ours really, we feed it etc, and it is here most of the day. We are not sure who he belongs to, but we have a freeling it is a neighbour, an old man who is unable to look after him properly, we think. He came to us looking very scruffy and skinny, and we have fed him up etc.

However, this morning, he did a poo in the house (he normally asks to go out - he is very well house trained, which makes us think he hasn't been stray for long) and there was a blob of fresh blood in the poo. What could it be? I am so upset about it. We can't really afford to take him to the vets, what should I do? I don't think we are eligable for PDSA/RSPCA as neither of us are on benefits.

Ring RSPCA, tell them what you have said here and ask them if they could take a look, if it is what I think it is, the cat may die or infect other cats.

I'm not sure, but I don't think you need to be on benefits to have the cat treated at the PDSA. It might be worth ringing them, explaining the situation, and asking if they can help you. I do think that the cat needs to see a vet if he's got blood in his poo - it needs checking out. Try the PDSA first and see what they say.

I hope you can get this sorted out.

Have managed to locate the cat's owner. We live by a warden controlled estate, and it belongs to a guy there. He is middle aged and a bit weird. He came round a few mins ago and collected the cat, and shouted at me for feeding it!!!!! He was all soppy over DS, which made me a bit suspicious, tbh

My cat had same problem after loads of tests by vets they never found anything.Suggested i feed her on food from them which wasn't cheap!!! Then by chance tried her on cat biscuits made for older cats and that solved the problem... The owner did sound a bit strange...!!

I used to work for the PDSA. You need to be in receipt of housing benefit to qualify but (and I did not say this!) If you take him in and say that he is a stray but you were thinking of maybe taking him on and express your concern about blood in poo, lay it on thick - they might get one of the vets to check him over for you - worth a try?
