Hi!
Myself and dp are getting a dog through dogs trust.

dp has his heart set on a beautiful great Dane x, we've got the space and have been approved but I am concerned about the weight of the pooch-
ie if some thing happened an it broke a leg there is no way I could lift it into the car unassisted.

I know the likelyhood of this happening is relatively small but I am concerned.

Does anyone have large dogs? What do you do in this sort of situation?

Sorry if I'm being a bit dramatic, just want to make sure I don't let it down in anyway.
Thanks

I have 3 big buggers. There's only me and my teenaged DDs in our house but we manage. My main fear is that my epileptic Shep should fit when I'm out alone with him, hence I always carry my mobile. That way at least I can call a taxi to get him home or to the vet if necessary (and hope that the driver will help me!).

It's emergencies like these that we really have to trust in others' kindness and goodwill. The chances of such a dilemma with a healthy pet is very small - I think if we worried about all the "what if's" we'd never do anything. My risks are perhaps greater, having a buggered right arm which is less strong than most other peoples' and no friends or family in my village but still small enough for me to have three large dogs I think.

Thanks val! I am a bit of a worrier when it comes to the beasts!
I'm sure it will be alright, our vets is only 500 metres from our park so I'm sure they could send someone to help if no one else was available.
I don't suppose you could recommed any big dog beds?
Just can't wait to get him now!!

I second what val has said, i have 2 large mutts! and this very thing happened to the big boy (48kg) he had a series of op's on his hind leg and i had to rely heavily on people kindess, mainly the vet etc but once i had to ask a complete stranger in the street to help me Blush and he did!

I use these beds for my 2 who between them weigh nearly 80kg and who love to share and they are brilliant if a little £££, i just hose mine down in the garden when it needs scrubbing.

I saw a dog like that in Switzerland recently - a Leonberger (never heard of the breed before). His owners said that he weighs 60kg. Coming along a hiking path he looked a bit like those cute shaggy brown calves you see on Swiss mountain sides. Very friendly dog though!

Ours is dopey and very loving but has a very loud bark and woofs when posties people come to the house

he appears very loud and is big and bouncy but is a complete wimp once you know him and runs away from hoovers and squirrels
