Has anyone had any experience with this breed?

yes.

There will be lovers of this breed out there i am sure but in my experience they are simply Pitbulls that have been "rebranded"

I know of 2 AB's that have been Put to sleep as they were considered to be PB's by the RSPCA.

Of the half a dozen i have had experience of there has never been a singleone i would have around my children.

I believe nurture over nature in general but i also think that some breeds have a specific natural instinct that is hard to fight.
IMHO this particular breed is aggressive and powerful. not a good mix around children

This is generally a term for a pitbull terrier (which could not be sold under its real name).

Avoid.

LetThereBeRock · 03/10/2010 21:44

He's definitely not a pitbull. I puppysat for him and he's most definitely an American bulldog, not at all like a pitbull.

Actually I have no problem with pitties either. They were only ever intended to be dog aggressive, not people aggressive. Some stupid owners and breeders have ruined them. Not that I could own one here.

Ty for the responses.

I really should have clarified that I've a specific dog in mind.

Yes, a little. There's a poster on here who owns a couple but I'm buggered if I can recall her name atm!

Those I have met have been super - loyal, affectionate, good natured and surprisingly biddable.

Is there a problem with the dog you have in mind or have you been offered him?

Vallhala · 03/10/2010 22:17

Oh PS, they have naff all to do with the Pit Bull Terrier but are related instead to the English Bulldog.

LetThereBeRock · 03/10/2010 22:22

The owner is considering giving him up,as she doesn't have the time for him. And we're considering taking him.

I've owned German shepherds, boxers,Tibetan spaniels and crossbreeds before, but never an American bulldog.

We have been looking for another dog,and would prefer to avoid him going into the rescue system.

He'll certainly be going through puppy classes, intensive training, socialisation etc if we do take him.

Sounds lovely. Are you confident with him? Do you have faith in the owners and are you confident that they are being truthful with you wrt their reason for rehoming?

If you're happy in these respects there would appear to be no reason to turn him down.

If you'd like advice, even perhaps to see if you could get an independent assessment, have a word with American Bulldog Rescue UK. They're a part of of Bullies In Need. I've worked with BIN a couple of times, benefitted from their help in placing a couple of dogs and found them to be very good at what they do, and not just dedicated but friendly too.

I do rather like AmBulls and am just an incy bit jealous. :)

I know their reasons for rehoming him are genuine, not that they should have taken him in the first place, but that's another topic.

I do feel confident with him.He was a bit of a pain with nipping when I had him for the two weeks, but that's to be expected at that age,and training will help with that.

He enjoyed chasing the cat at first, but by the end of the two weeks he was much better.

I do tend to rush into things,so I'm going to give myself a few days to consider everything that taking him on involves, but I think it's likely that we'll take him,if his owner is still set on giving him up.

Thankyou for your thoughts. It's much appreciated, and I will check out the ABR forum.

He does have a lovely nature, and it'll show even more when he's trained.
He loves people. He thinks every stranger is a friend, and doesn't understand why not everyone wants to fuss over him.Grin
