Finding a home/refuge for dogs in Italy .... long shot!

My mum can't cope with her two youngish dogs any more, and is having trouble finding new homes for them. I know the Italian attitude to pets is slightly different to the British, but surely there must be something like Battersea Dogs Home over there!

I've searched google ("animali rifugio") and come up with some links which I'll investigate, but thought it was worth a try to post here and ask if anyone has any words of advice.

Not holding my breath!

thanks for that ks

i've had my mum in tears on the phone because the vet told her that if she puts them in a dogs' home, hunters will take them, drive them to exhaustion, then shoot them. Charming eh!

I thought she was bringing them back to UK SpaceD?

She needs to rehome them as soon as possible, which rules out bringing them back to the UK (which takes a series of jabs over a 6 month period)

Oh, no, your poor mum! I haven't any advice, but I hope you/she find somewhere for them. Are they hunting-type breed?

Difficult to re-home them together too. It is a pity you can't find an English run refuge, like this one in Skiathos, Greece. I wonder if they might be able to find someone?

spacedonkey · 05/09/2005 15:49

Nah they're just a pair of mangy curs, otherwise I think it would be easy to find homes for them. I have said the same thing to mum i.e. talk to/email some of these rifugi, explain the situation - I'm sure someone will take pity and offer to take them!

nb - they're not really mangy

Just to round off this thread with an update, both dogs are emigrating to Germany tomorrow ... apparently there's a shortage of small dogs there!

Aww, sad for your mum. But a good ending (hopefully) for the dogs. Are they being separated?

spacedonkey · 12/10/2005 10:29

buongiorno zenzerobear! Yeah, I think they will be separated, but that's a good thing because they're v competitive. Mum's a bit shaky about it but we're with her to hold her hand when the deed is done

I live in le marche and where we are there are a few dogs homes for strays. Personally I don't the attitute to dogs is very different were we are, perhaps further south maybe. I agree with KS it is very regionally organised. Perhaps you could put a note in the local paper.

Where does your Mum live SD? I'm in Venice (although just about to move after 3 wonderful years here) Amazed you couldn't find a home for them here, everyone seems to love dogs - almost as much as children from what I can gather. Glad there is a happy ending but how sad for your Mum, hope she's OK.

spacedonkey · 12/10/2005 11:21

Aw thanks albert She's in Umbria (near Todi)
