Blood in dog urine

Hi- can someone please reassure me that my dog will be ok?

Kes lives with my mum due to our circumstance not being suitable for her. Both of us work full time, have no garden for her to run around in, etc so when I moved my mum kept her.

She is a 12 year old Border collie, completely lovely but has slowed down masses recently. Has been diagnosed as slightly arthitic, but takes supplements and painkillers when needed. Recently (past week) my mum has discovered that she isn't able to quite make it outside to wee and today she has seen pinky tinges in the puddles. Kes looks very upset by this. She is drinking a bit more than normal, but is still eating well and stealing from the 2 cat's bowls.

Does this sound like a urine infection or is it likely to be more serious? Plus, is there any chance that a vet would do a house call/ allow an over the phone prescription as my mother doesn't drive and my sister is 34 weeks pregnant and the size of a small house ( her words, not mine) so cannot lift her into the car?

Is she neutered?

SecretNutellaFix · 17/09/2010 20:32

no, but she has come out of heat about 3 weeks ago.

Well (am not a vet, but a former vet nurse) I'd say she does need to be checked over by a vet asap. The vet should do house calls and would be able to see her tomorrow. Could be a urine infection but could also be a womb infection which is potentially fatal. Give the vet a ring & keep us posted please.

I'll let my mum know. Thanks.

No probs - good luck & let us know how she does Smile

Ditto Bella, definitely needs to be seen asap. Give the vet a call tonight and see what they say, they will do house calls but if it is a pyometra (womb infection) she will need to go to the surgery. Is there a neighbour that could help get her into the car if that is the case.
Your mum could also take her temperature if she feels confident doing so.

SecretNutellaFix · 17/09/2010 20:52

No- There isn't. Not a very neighbourly lot where she lives.

Oh. How far is the vets? Would a taxi be feasible? Some will take dogs if you ask when you book and put some old towels down to catch any drips.

SecretNutellaFix · 17/09/2010 21:11

About 3 miles, but no taxi service sin the town.

Mum rang, and the vet seemed ok to leave it till the morning as mum did say that she is still quite happy begging for food and has made it out twice to wee and didn't see any pink, but will try to get DSis DP to drag her down there tomorrow.

Not entirely happy, but Mum is placated.

Bloody mothers.

Will keep you updated. Thanks again.

No problem, fingers crossed for simple urine infection

SecretNutellaFix · 17/09/2010 21:37

Crossed here too Wink

The bitch is fine today. Nothing in her wee and she made it outside everytime to do her business. Vet said it sounded like her body had dealt with it ok but keep an eye out.

I swear, if I didn't love her so much I'd kill her! (mother and dog both!)

thanks for taking time to reply
