Any cat breeders out there?

Does anyone know if a singleton kitten is OK or not. I thought kittens were usually born in litters of three or four and I wondered why a kitten would be a singleton. Would that suggest the mother has had too many kittens in the past or is in some way not healthy? Would it mean the kitten itself is unhealthy in any way?

Hoping for a quick answer as may be viewing a kitten tomorrow who was the only kitten born to the mother.

Bubblerock, where do you get these details from? I have been trawling the internet until I am going squared eyed and can find nothing at all!

These look promising although it is still Bristol and some way to travel but I can't have everything can I?

Have you looked on your local newspapers website?

Lonelymum · 03/09/2005 21:56

I am going to get dh to buy a local paper tomorrow when he gets the Sunday paper. Part of my trouble is that I do not know the names of the local papers as we are new here.

LM - buy "Trade it" should be one out tommorrow IIRC, I used to get it when we lived in Glos and most of the ads were in Bristol, fishponds etc.. I can't believe the price some people are charging for moggies though!! Might have to start a Kitten farm

Nbg · 03/09/2005 22:30

I found this on todays Bristols Evening Post.

Ginger male, 8 weeks old, litter trained, good home wanted, £45.
Tel 01454 632478 and 07791 849258

Siamese or Black oriental kittens, £300
Tel 01531 822336.

There were more sites, bear with me...

bubblerock · 03/09/2005 22:31

HERE is their online paper just type in Kitten and all categories. I'm sure they come out Sun, Wed & Fri and they are yellow, green & pink! HTH

princesspeahead · 03/09/2005 22:34

lonelymum, why don't you go to your local animal shelter? look in your yellow pages, there are masses of them. they all have kittens and cats coming out of their ears, sadly.
I got two really nice rabbits that way...

Nbg · 03/09/2005 22:34

Theres loads on there LM.

Lonelymum · 03/09/2005 22:36

Nbg, I have those 2 ads thanks. I think Bubblerock found them for me earlier! The ginger male is the one I am supposed to be going to see tomorrow.

Thanks yet again Bubblerock. There is an interesting ad there for tabby kittens in Bradley Stoke which is much nearer to me than the other places you copied for me.

Thanks so much you guys. I feel I can really make a few calls now tomorrow and hopefully can give the ginger singleton a miss (sorry puss!)

oh also our vet always has ads up, and they are usually litters from cats that they know as well as being v local. worth a look.

Nbg · 03/09/2005 22:37

Sorry

Hope you find one!

Lonelymum · 03/09/2005 22:37

PPH, I tried that this morning and they either had none or didn't answer the phone. Anyway, I think they won't let me have kittens as my youngest is 2 and they don't rehome to families with little children.

Sorry, that last comment of mine was re animal shelters, not vets!

So grateful for your help everyone. My kids are dying for some kittens (they have never had pets before) and I love cats and will be quite happy to be left in sole care of them if things go the way they usually do with children!

princesspeahead · 03/09/2005 22:41

oh dear. they didn't have that policy with rabbits but I can see that cats could potentially inflict a bit more damage on a child if provoked etc.
call a few vets and see if they have any ads up - may save you a trip to bradley stoke!

bubblerock · 03/09/2005 23:01

No probs - I love cats too but can't really have furry pets here - so make sure you post a pic when you get some!

ps - I had to drive from Glos to Wolverhampton one christmas eve as it was the only place I could find kittens!!

Lonelymum · 03/09/2005 23:08

Just been through that Trade it ad and there are about 29 possible kittens out there for me to enquire about tomorrow! (8 phone numbers) That should keep me busy!

So now, next question: what should I expect from the owners re treatment ie should they have proof they have had kittens wormed and de fleaed or do I have to just take their word for it?

Anything else they should be able to show me they have had done?

How much will an initial vet's bill be likely to be? I suppose I should have them checked out (but only after purchase ) and spayed etc.

I have seen those plastic cat carriers around. Are they the best thing for transporting cats in? My childhood cats had a wicker basket but I haven't seen those for sale and don't know how they compare with the plastic jobbies.

I know that when I got my two I was really strapped for cash so I rang the cats protection league and told them I had taken in two 'unwanted' kittens and needed some advice etc... about neutering. They had a scheme where they sent a voucher to an approved vet in your area and you didn't have to pay as much - I think it cost me £15 each which was really cheap.

It says here that you need to be on benefits, but we weren't and nobody asked:

£ £ £... Help! It's too expensive!
For many people, neutering their pets is simply too expensive, but DON'T PANIC - help is at hand! If you are receiving benefit, are a pensioner, or are on a low income you can get low-cost, and sometimes even no-cost, neutering as follows:

LOW COST NEUTERING VOUCHERS:
CATS PROTECTION: CP Vouchers cover roughly half the cost of the average neutering / spaying charge. You can apply directly to any Cats Protection branch or shelter, who keep a supply of vouchers, or phone their national Helpline on 08702 099099. You may be asked to fill in an application form and provide a copy of the cover of your benefit book to obtain the voucher. You will need to take the voucher to the vet when getting your cat neutered, and all you pay is the remaining balance. For details of your nearest Cats Protection branch, go to our Shelters section and choose your area from the map.

RSPCA: Low-cost neutering vouchers are available from most RSPCA branches. Contact your nearest branch, or if you don't have a branch near you, call their national helpline on: 0870 333 5999.
