We had a siamese cat about 5 years ago (died sadly when dd was around 6 months) and we are now at a stage where I thinki it would be a good idea for us as a family to have a pet.

Im keen on a cat and in fact have my eye set on one in particulr and would be ready in about 4 weeks time...

This is where I need help. The cat would be a persian chinchilla breed so nothing to wild. From what I have read and heard they can be a placid breed although I understand playful as all kittens.

With our last cat he was an indoor cat, but we found at any opportunity he would be curious around open windows and doors. Occasionally making a run for it only to sculk (?) about outside as he was unsure of his surroundings.

This is the only thing that worries me. I would get the kitten netured when she was ready to hopefully stop wanting or curiosity BUT does anyone else find their indoor cat does this is maybe our last cat was a one off..?

I just feel, having 2 lo's (3 and 5) although good with animals and cats obviously doors could get left open and I wonder if the cat would make a run for it..?

What do you do in the summer and open windows..?

sorry if it sounds a silly question Hmm tia x

We have a pedigree cat,who we took in when she couldn't stay in her previous home. She had been an indoor cat,but we decided that we would never be able to keep her in,with children running in and out.

So she now goes out - but in practice she doesn't do far, only out into the garden properly if someone is already out there etc.She very very occasionally does leave the garden, but only if I'm out there gardening.I assumed this was because she'd been brought up inside.
But she will go out of any available crack, including the upstairs windows, even though once she is out she just sits there.

Can you get net to fit over windows?

not sure what we could do with windows.. hmm..
Thing is im not so bothered if the cat goes out and sits, less stressful. Worries me no end if the cat gets out of the garden as with our last cat.. No road sense, daft as a brush and meant me trawling the streets like a mad cat women trying to find him!!

I have a Persian who we got at about 5 months of age. She had never been outside but we have never had an indoor cat. Took her a while to get used to going out, she didn't understand wind for ages and kept looking to see what was touching her.
She goes out now but not as much as the others and is very rarely far away although worryingly has seen her near the road on his way home from work on a couple of occasions.
She even catches mice now although never kills them but drops them live indoors for me to catch, bless!
I would find it really hard to keep a cat indoors all the time, its hard enough to keep my sisters 2 cats in when they come to stay.

Ah bless ! I guess its also dependant on their nature ...

We have a tonkinese (burmese/siamese x). We let her outside. She loves it, she's a real hunter and hares around the garden all day. I can't see how, practically, we could keep all the doors and windows closed all the time.
A lovely breed though - very friendly and easy going - allows my son and his friends to chase and drag her around without complaint.

We have two indoor cats. OOne is a ragdoll, the other a moggy. Both have always been kept as housecats. They do get supervised back garden access in summer. They would both like to get out, but the ragdoll did manage to escape a few weeks ago and just wanted ot get back in. I am too worried about what might happen to them if they did get out, for a start I know one of my neighbours lets her FIV cat outside, and the are perfectly content indoors.

My older two DC know to keep doors/windows closed and I keep the doors/windows locked anyway as my youngest DC is an escape artist! In summer we had the windows on trickle and the back door open but the interior doors to the kitchen closed. If we had any bedroom windows fully open for airing, we just kept the nedroom doors shut. It does help that we have a kind of 'porch' so we in effect have two front doors.

I have an exotic shorthair, and she is an indoor cat, we don't have a garden but she does like to go out on the balcony for a snooze, I also only leave windows open slightly but she never tries to get out and actually just sits on the window sill watching the world go by.
I did leave the front door open the other day, she poked her nose out had a sniff and ran back inside!.
