Cocker spaniels and springer spaniels?

Thats it really, does anyone have any experience or preference?

Looking to get a puppy towards the end of the year so am just doing a bit of research at the moment.

Springers are MAD! (IMO!).

They are slightly larger than the Cocker and ime (meeting them, not as an owner, I'm not that brave), Springers are "busier", the more demanding of these two working breeds.

There have been concerns recently about cockers wrt over-breeding which can cause them to have head/skull problems and suffer pain as well as "cocker rage". I must admit that I've met a couple in the past 2 years or so which are very different than the ones I knew as a child and to my stereotypical view of them but that may very well be pure coincidence.

In the opinions of those I know who own Springers the general view is that Springers require a lot of mental stimulation and exercise, more so than Cockers.

This is just my take, I have dealt with a few in rescue but I'm a GSD and Lab owner and although I've owned and fostered other breeds, with the exception of one Cocker cross foster boy I haven't had a great deal of experience with either breed.

I'm hoping to get a cocker soon!
Cockers are a bit smaller and stockier and are less workingish than springers.
Both are brilliant though I think!

florencerusty · 09/09/2010 22:27

Both are mad !!!!!!

fruitshootsandheaves · 09/09/2010 22:42

Springers are much better

It should be the law for everyone to own a springer

Mine doesn't require much mental stimulation, all he needs is a ball and a bit of garden!

Springers are lunatic. Definitely get one.

Bella32 · 10/09/2010 18:40

Springers are on my wish list. Cockers aren't. Can't really fully explain why - though I do lurve Springers...

BitterAndTwistedChoreDodger · 10/09/2010 18:42

Springers do calm down eventually. My parents springer has started to settle a bit in the last 6 months or so... At the age of 14!

kid · 12/09/2010 09:32

I have a springer and I can honestly say he is not a lunatic! Maybe it's because he is a show type?

I had a springer x cocker that was a lunatic. He came from working parents and he really was mental. He would run backwards and forwards across the room jumping from the sofas on each side of the room.

I did want to get a cocker as they are smaller and require less exercise, but there is the small risk of cocker rage which is slightly more common in a particular colour (can't remember which)
I went through a checklist to compare the two breeds and a springer was more suitable for us.

Good luck with your decision
if you want to ask any questions about my springer, please do. He is still just a baby, 14 weeks today Smile

BelieveInLife · 15/09/2010 19:27

Springers are brilliant - totally loopy but great fun.

Cocker rage more common in golden ones iirc. Friend had one that went nuts and ripped the interior of her car to shreds and she was in the car with it at the time!

Golden Retrievers also fab, great family pet but MUCH bigger and need a lot more mental stimulation. More dependent on you to entertain them whereas like someone else has said, give a springer a ball and an open space and they'll entertain themselves.

Out of the three breeds I would go for a Golden Retriever. (obviously... Grin )

Springers, well, the clue is in the name. They are extremely bouncy and energetic and that is what some people love about them, but some (I would I'm afraid) find it wearing. They are quite trainable, but there is a reason gundog folk say 'a Golden is born half trained, a springer will die half trained'... :runs and hides:

Cockers are quieter than srpingers IME. They can still be hyper, especially working types, but show types are much quieter and have a lovely temprement. As far as I am aware rage syndrome only occurs in solid dogs, predominantly reds and blacks and it pretty rare anyway. I haven't heard of any head/skull problems as Valhalla has mentioned. (any info Val?) Cockers are obviously smallest of the three. Their coats require a fair bit of maintenance unless you clip them, which I really hate, as why get a dog if you don't like the coat it has?

Goldens... well, what can I say?! The most kind, biddable and lovable dogs in the whole wide world! More seriously, they can be a little hyper as puppies, (that's a puppy thing!) but are generally very calm and easy. They are one of the most intelligent dog breeds apparently (coming after collies and GSD's). Their coats need regular brushing, but aren't overly inclined to get matted. They are pretty hairy, but the hair easily brushes off things. They could also find a wet, muddy puddle in the middle of the sahara! Everyone loves them, wherever you go people want to say hello to them, they are recognised everywhere as a wonderful family pet. (I have recently learnt this is not the case for staff crosses, no-one speaks to my foster pup! Sad )

I'll let you into a secret... I never wanted a Golden Retriever, I wanted a Rottweiler, Doberman or Labrador. I thought Goldens were quite ugly actually. Shock My DH really wanted a Golden, so I agreed. I just cannot imagine my life without one now.

My DH would adore your staffie cross Midori.

He tried to come home with a staffie pup a couple of months ago "its gorgous, when you see it you'll love it". Unfortunately I had to put my foot down, my lab is enough and until he's a bit older having another dog in the house would be bedlam.

GR's are lovely biddable dogs and easy to train. Every single one I have met has a lovely temperament and are ideal for family pets.

Although obviously I would recommend a lab Wink
