Dog Attack - help please

I have posted on the local board, however, no one ever seems to go there.

Were any MNs at Thatcham Nature Discovery Lakes West Berks today when my cockapoo puppy suffered a severe unprovoked attack leaving him seriously injured. Were you there? Did you see what happened or were the lovely mummy who look after the two girls whilst it was happening - if you were thank you.
As some of you may know I am a vet and my baby is going to be okay. However, this was the single most nasty dog attack I have ever seen and I have seen a few. I have serious concerns that the owner of this dog had no lead and could not control his dog in a public place. The dog also appeared to dislike my puppy, who was on a lead, and flew at him.

Jesus Lizcat, I'm so sorry to hear this. When I read the title I thought you must be referring to someone else... but you're a vet! (Stupid cow I am, as if vets are immune to meeting twunts).

Would you like this enquiry posted to my email list in the hope that someone might recognise the description of the event and come forward? (i.e. no more than the place, date, fact that a cockapoo was attacked whilst walking with lady owner and her 2 daughters, with a request that I'm contacted in the first instance, to protect your anonimity). No promises it will reap rewards but such appeals for help do reach a remarkable number of people across the country. If I get any responses I'd let you know I have and put my email up on here for you to contact me.

No offence taken of course if this isn't what you want or of no use. :)

I'm sure you know, but just in case this helps anyone else, it would be wise to report this to your dog warden if you haven't already.

I'm very glad that little pups will be alright and hope that the poor mite isn't too distressed or hurt. Jeez, I bet you're in a pickle, your girls too. Sending kindest wishes and thoughts to you all.

I can't offer any help, but I am really sorry this happened to your dog. I'm sure you and your children must be feeling really shaken up by this, not to mention your puppy. There are some very irresponsible people out there, but also others who remind us of how wonderful people can be to one another. The lady who helped your children sounds like one of those. Hope you all recover soon.

Thank you Vallhala we have an incident number with Thames Valley Police URN 1134.
Unfortunately we are not immune from the complete twunts. However, I have had a large number of dogs take a dislike to me in my time, but never before have I seen a completely warningless attack of such severity.
My concern is that this is not the first time as the twunt did say to the dog they're going get you put down for it this time. I don't need this dog to be destroyed I do need it to be on a lead and muzzled around other dogs and children.

Bless you for being so forgiving. I'd like to think I would too and goodness knows, being so gobby supportive of dogs I should be, but many would want the dog dead. Me being me, well, you know, I'd want to know what made him that way and would be looking at the owner. Probably rightly in this case as he clearly knew his dog was a danger to others by his comment. What a b!

I digress, sorry.

It may be worth putting out the word to colleagues about the local DW for the area and finding out what his/her likely actions would be. What did the Police say they will do, out of interest? (Always handy to know in my "line").

Forgive me for being thick, but is that a yes or no to me appealing for info?

(As I said, genuinely no offence taken if its a no, I'm not trying to be a busybody but if I can help of course I will). :)

Lizcat · 27/08/2010 21:39

Yes to appealing for info.
The police are coming on Sunday morning to interview me, they say they take these incidents very seriously now days.
The local DW unfortunately is a chocolate tea pot and we are for ever clearing up their messes. I do do a lot of RSPCA work so the the inspectors and ACOs are on the look out for this dog it is very distinctive (looks like it might be imported with cropped upright ears - as done in Germany). If I have my kind hat on the dog was a bull breed cross, to be truthful he looked like he had pitt in him, which not surprise me as there is a circle of people with fighting pitts in Reading - whole other story how I know about.

Thanks, will get on to it tonight and get back to you.

Its possible that this dog has come over from Ireland from the sound of it, though the US are fond of cutting poor dogs' ears too. I'm not asking you to answer this here but it may be worth asking yourself if there are any particular Irish traveller communities locally as I think that if so that may be where the Police and RSPCA need to start looking.

Doesn't sound like the poor dog stands a chance, does it? Bloody humans! Angry

WRT the DW, would it be worth contacting his boss, the head of EH, about the matter? That you have the Police and RSPCA onside and are a vet might just make him kick the chocolate teapot up the backside.

Sh*t... I feel as guilty as sin in making comment which could cause a dog to be PTS. I know too though that I'd feel just as bad if I didn't and next time YOUR pup had to suffer that as a result.

iloverhubarbcrumble · 27/08/2010 21:56

So sorry Lizcat, what an appalling thing to happen. Just sending good wishes for your puppy, DDs and you.

Amanderrr · 28/08/2010 01:08

Oh how awful. I'm so glad your dog is going to be okay.

I also feel terribly sorry for the other dog though. I hope he's found and removed from the owner.

Lizcat · 28/08/2010 09:00

Thank you everyone for your best wishes the little one had a comfortable night and is brighter today. Poor mite is just terribly nervous when you touch him, so once he is recovered we will have to work very hard at re-socialisation.
Vallhala WRT to DW is ongoing problem for last 6 years been contracted out to useless company who has taken on too many local contracts and has one DW covering too large an area. Even trading standards have problems with the DW and we all just try to work around them.

Just seen this, so sorry, I am so glad he is ok though, best wishes for a speedy recovery for him.

Madsometimes · 28/08/2010 13:56

I'm glad you and your puppy had a good night.

I did meet a foster carer for Battersea in our local park a few weeks ago. He was caring for a staff-type dog that had been picked up in a house with many other dogs, all in terrible condition. The dogs had been used for fighting and many of them had their ears cut off. The carer's dog was still young, so had not been cut. I think only a minority of the dogs were capable of being socialised for rehoming in this case, because of the extent of the abuse Sad. The police were prosecuting this case, so hopefully the dogs that were PTS would have some justice.

There are many people that just should not be allowed to have their own animals.
