What could be causing our 2 year old dog to howl like a wolf during the night

He did it quite a lot when we moved her 6 months ago. And we used to leave a nightlight on in the dining room for him (yes I knwo he's a dog and not a child, but it worked). Eventually we stopped and he was fine.
The past 7-10 days he has been doing it agai, he sounds like a wolfGrin. Last night it was at 3am, and 3.30. The night before was 5am.
Also he has been chewing his bog bed - he was a huge chewer when he was a pup, something which didn't really stop until he was almost 2.
Now he doesn't do, and we actually feel comfortbale leaving him in his bed and my mum's/MILs and not in his crate.About 1/2 hour after I'd been down to see what was wrong with him, I heard a sort of scraping noise nad knew it was him chewing something - his bed.

Anys uggestions as to what could be causing it? He's 2 1/2 now

It sounds like anxiety, has anything else changed for him? Or could anything happened at night that has scared him, like a thunder storm, fireworks? I know it is hard to know though as you were probably asleep.

Nothing has changed for him - we thought he was getting settled after the move (6 mths ago).
One of us comes down and checks him and he's usually just lying inh is bed, but he reacts as if he's done something he knows is wrong - if that makes sense, he reacts as though he's going to get told off!

I know lots of people won't have a dog in their bedroom but do you think he could be lonely?

Something spooked him and he howled. You came down to check on him so he picked up that if he howled you came. It could just be that he doesn't want to be alone.

We were given a dog (Papillon) last year and as we didn't know if he was properly house trained we shut him in the kitchen for his first night with us. My God, what a din! We let him come up to the bedroom with us and the other dogs and he was fine. He just didn't want to be alone.

Is this something you could consider?

If he was in the bedroom he'd want up on the bed, he's a Border Collie too so not small.
I might go back to leaving a night light on for him for a while
