Just about to order on t'interweb.

Do people avoid dogs name for theft reasons? Do you have your full address, phone, mobile anything else?

Was going to add MICROCHIPPED, though he isn't yet but will be.

One side is home phone number (with country code - in case he get's lost when we're abroad or in Ireland).

Other side, mobile phone number (with country code - see above).

No name and not mentioned micro-chipping coz didn't think about it. Also, I've heard (pure rumour) that if a dog thief knows a dog is micro-chipped, they are capeable of trying to cut the chip out. Could be pure tosh but sounds plausible.

Vallhala · 25/08/2010 15:49

No name(don't want anyone having mine or being able to lure my dog away by knowing theirs) but both home and mobile numbers plus address and postcode. Seperate tags stating that the boys are chipped and giving the company's number also on their collars. These came from the microchip company.

Re the name - dog theft is more prevelant now than other and a real and serious risk. Many a time an owner has had to pay a ransom and with that sort of person to deal with I reckon that it' enough for them to have your phone number and address without having your name too. (NB, NEVER leave your dog unattended in garden/outside shops etc). For this reason you may prefer just house number and postcode. The road is still easy enough to find if you have access to the net but the theif may not go to the effort, whilst of course the dog warden would (I'd like to think!).

My long term foster GSD also has a tag with the rescue's number on it. On the other side it says "Microchupped and neutered".

I have heard the fears about b***ds cutting chips out of dogs but have never known it to be done (am a rescuer and AR supporter so would be likely to know of it if it happened).

One thing that DOES happen is the cutting off or burning with acid of racing Greyhound's ears in order to get rid of the tattoos within them, thereby destroying evidence of the owner when that owner abandons the dog contrary to the advice of the impotent, self-intersted, and irresponsible Greyhound Board of Great Britain.

Pah! Dog theft is nore prevelent than EVER, not than other!

minimu1 · 25/08/2010 16:42

Kennel Club website states that

"The Control of Dogs Order 1992 mandates that any dog in a public place must wear a collar with the name and address (including postcode) of the owner engraved or written on it, or engraved on a tag. Your telephone number is optional (but advisable)."

Personally I have my surname and address including postcode and land line and mobile phone number. (not the dogs name).

Bella32 · 25/08/2010 17:13

I've got the same as minimu, with the addition of 'microchipped'.

On a lovely collar tag ordered from those lovely people at indigo collars as recommended by the lovely minimu Wink

Scuttlebutter · 25/08/2010 17:22

Our hounds wear an engraved disc, which contains our surname, the postcode and housenumber, and the dog's name. They all also wear a plastic "I'm chipped, scan me" tag in a separate place on their collar. Unfortunately, Val is correct about greyhounds' ears, many are dumped with ears cut off. One of the reasons why many greyhound charities are working to make chipping mandatory. I have never come across any cases of chips being removed by dog thieves, or heard any credible evidence for this, and am closely involved in research in this subject. As well as being a legal requirement, it is essential to wear a collar and tag, even if your dog has been chipped, since not all Councils will scan for chips at all times. My website lists all the policies for Welsh local authorities and has lots of stats on strays in Wales, with more being addedd all the time.

Lizcat · 26/08/2010 08:44

I have cockapoo so not weighing it down with excessive size at 14 weeks is a challenge. I have two small discs microchip companies disk and my own disc with surname and postcode on one side and my mobile number on the other (not changed it in 15 years so unlikely to).
There are some really 'lovely' dog wardens out there who will fine you up to £5000 for not having this information on you dog.
Whilst the microchip is not a legal requirement it is very helpful where ownership is disputed. Personally I scan every adult dog that arrives as a newly acquired pet in our practice, though I am often amazed by some of the stories that do turn out to be innocent.

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 26/08/2010 09:45

Thanks everyone, after asking here and some other whippy owners too, I have gone for - our telephone no, mobile no, vets no, 'all vet fees will be paid' and MICROCHIPPED.

Because whippets are so lovely and friendly apparently there have been horrible cases where people have been stopped by strangers whilst out walking, who have spent some time fussing the dog (and with hindsight checking the tag), the tag had the dogs address and days later the dog was stolen from the house or garden.

So while I know my tag is not quite legal with it not featuring the address, I am not prepared to take the risk.

my dogs has house number and postcode, our surname and house number.
thinking of getting another one with I am, chipped and spayed onit for discouraging of theft purposes, is this a good idea?

Vallhala · 26/08/2010 11:45

Dita, it certainly can't do any harm. It could be argued that these discs are becoming more popular and so could easily be just a ruse to deter theft but AAIAC chances are that someone who goes to the effort of having extra info on dog tags/2 tags is likely to be the type whose dog IS spayed and chipped.

Just PLEASE make sure that you never put your dog at risk. Don't leave him unattended outside a shop or unattended in your garden - a quick look at DogLost alone will show you that a really scary percentage of missing dogs have been stolen from their own gardens.

WTWTW, I can't say I blame you for your choice of information.

Avantia · 26/08/2010 12:44

got my tag done at the local pet shop - tel no , mobile no , postcode and 'Chipped' - not chipped yet but will be next week when last lot of jabs done.

he pet shop said not to put dog's name on it as dogs will go to anyone who calls their name ?

I am not going to worry about it not being legal when local authorities can even monitor dog fouling ( that's another thread in itself ) .

thighsmadeofcheddar · 26/08/2010 12:46

Vallhala do you think that thieves would go after a male GSD (pedigree) that has been neutered, or would they only want a fully intact dog?

Southwestwhippet · 26/08/2010 12:57

My whippets have my surname, house name and postcode on one side and the words "Microchipped & Neuteured" on the other.

Unfortunately in our area our whippets are most at risk of theft by gypsies (whippets very popular with gypsies who like to breed them with terriers to make tough, compact lurcher types). Many gypsies do not read so it is fairly pointless tagging them this way but I always have regardless.

PhaseolusLunatus · 26/08/2010 13:03

Surname, mobile number, vet's number.

Vallhala · 26/08/2010 13:07

Both are at risk, sadly. An neutered dog may not be of use for breeding but he can guard a yard, be sold for a profit, be bait for a fighting dog... all sorts of options sadly.

It worries me as whilst my champagne L/C GSD is wary of strangers and would run and/or growl rather than go off with them, my B&T GSD loves everyone. Luckily we come supported by our other pal, a black Lab cross. I don't envy the person who tries to come into my house or garden uninvited!

I keep saying it but I'd rather bore people than see a dog go missing... NEVER leave your dog unattended, even in your own garden. Dog theft from gardens is far more common than you might think.

Blondeshavemorefun · 29/08/2010 00:01

have family surname and phone number on it

Tortington · 29/08/2010 00:03
