Whippets are lovely and have you considered a greyhound? Some of the bitches can be quite small, if size is an issue for you. You would also be doing a great job in giving an ex racer a home. Lara's points about sofa annexing and food stealing apply equally to greys too Grin Also, with whippets and greys generally, they are very, very addictive and one is rarely enough.....

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 16/08/2010 07:58

Can't help you I'm afraid I have an 11 week old Whippet puppy and he is adorable and the easiest puppy I have ever had.

Do it do it do it.

Can't help I am afraid, they are the most gerogeous dogs, parents ha dthem when we were growing up.

brimfull · 16/08/2010 08:19

Know what you mean about the clinginess.

I love greys as well but we have had big dog and I liekthe idea of a small one now.

Grey rescue though has always appealed

Are whippets ok with being left ,obviously not straight away.

Bobbalina · 16/08/2010 08:30

Whippets are lovely but a newspaper ran an article saying they cost you £6k over their lifetime which is a bit scary

izzybiz · 16/08/2010 08:43

Whippets aren't really my cup of tea tbh, too bony!
But, my SIL has a blue whippet pup, they paid £600 for him though! He is absolutley crazy, I mean totaly nuts! He is also so so funny, like a complete character!

He "speaks" all the time, when the postman comes, someone walks by the house, he wants everyone to be his friend! Grin

brimfull · 16/08/2010 08:59

bobbalina-is that figure for whippets alone or all dogs?

Over breeding is by far the most serious problem. We despair at the amount of people who insist on buying dogs from breeders, puppy farms the internet etc. while thousands of unwanted dogs are waiting desperately in rescue kennels for loving homes and thousands more are being euthanized. The slogan ?Don?t Breed or Buy While Homeless Dogs Die? is commonly used by animal shelters around the world and it speaks volumes. We urge anyone thinking of taking on a dog to please adopt one from a reputable rescue instead of buying a dog from a breeder, puppy farm etc. If every prospective dog owner was to do this, then the numbers of unwanted dogs in the UK would fall dramatically.

Taken from K9 news.

As scuttlebuttler says there are some really
small bitches on greyhound rescue sites
or there are some small whippet crosses on
lurcher rescue. Please dont pay for a puppy
when there are so many lovely dogs waiting to be your best griend.

Bobbalina · 16/08/2010 11:30

It was specifically whippets - they did do other dogs too as it depends partly on how long they live - I only remember the whippet cost as they are the dog I fancy having! Vets insurance is a fair amount of it.

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 16/08/2010 12:33

The article about them being the most expensive dog to keep is utter bollocks and has been the source of much hilarity on the sighthound forums I belong to.

It actually said £66 thousand, which I presume is what you mean, £6 thousand for a dog that lives for around 14 years would be about right.

It quotes £536 a year for grooming, grooming most people use a marigold glove!

Really don't let it put you off it ran in several papers and is utter tosh.

Like any dogs whippets are fine to be left for short periods of time 3-4 hours is fine, 6-8 hours very occasionally, I woulds suggest crate training thoug as they can be destructive.

WingsTHEangel · 16/08/2010 12:44

We have two lurchers so I can see the appeal of the whippet too.
The older the dog it usually cost more for insurance.

We got our first lurcher from the RSPCA she was 6mths when we got her and our 2nd a bull cross lurcher from (Lurcher link)he is 7yr old and a real cuddle monster.

ihearthuckabees · 16/08/2010 13:05

Another vote for getting a whippet - lovely dogs. Quiet, playful with other dogs but not aggressive in any way, not smelly, robust health (although you have to watch for cuts and nicks as they have very little protection from their coats), very gentle and loving but still full of character.

They need a really cosy bed at night and love to get into bed with you, although mine's not allowed (mean dog owner I am). He gets turns on the sofa though!

Mine cost £250 from a breeder, but he is faulty (i.e. not show quality) and he was 1 year old too, not a puppy. Remember to factor in the cost of making your garden secure though - they are not the type of dog that will happily sit at the front of your house unsupervised!

EdgarAllenPop · 16/08/2010 13:11

get one get one get one -

a rescue one though - so many of this breed in rescue it would be wrong not to.

comtessa · 16/08/2010 13:12

Love Lurkys, so assume Whippets will be similar. How about a Whippet cross?

MindySimmons · 16/08/2010 14:13

Sorry, I'm not going to help either! Easy, loving, lazy, flouncy, hilarious, bonkers - all characteristics of the whippets we had when I was a child.

DH not ready for a dog ownership, but I have managed to convince him that DD needs a kitten! Our Siberian arrives in two weeks (dog like temperament apparently Wink)

brimfull · 16/08/2010 14:42

hmm you lot are so not puttin me off

I will definitely get a rescue dog

have looked at local rspca and all the lurchers are not suitable for children under 10

will look at grey rescue
