"Dogs in rescue are not broke, they don?t need fixing. They just need a home."

Here are 10 good reasons for considering adopting. :)

Do you know any collie rescue organisations Vallhala? We've decided we're ready for another dog and have fallen for collie type dogs. Our local rescue centre hasn't had any collies for ages, we're prepared to wait but just thought I'd ask :)

We would love a dog.

I don't know if we are suitable though.

Firstly we would need to seek permission from the landlord and agents, when we already have special license to have a cat, three rabbits, two piggies and 6 chickens!

I do wonder what the neighbours would think of a dog as they can be noisy I suppose.

and lastly, walks - we have countryside nearby and a huge garden, but generally the walks would be to school and back twice a day - is this enough? (about a mile and a half each way) and what do you do when you want to pop in Tesco?!!

Flighttattendant · 07/08/2010 08:03

Bob - we would also like a collie!

BobLoblaw · 07/08/2010 08:41

We've had our collieX a year, we definitely didn't want a collie when we were looking but we fell in love Grin

Our doggy would be happy with 6 miles a day if she got a good run off the lead too, she exhausts herself playing fetch in the doggy park, and we hide stuff for her to find in the garden.

Penny can be left for a few hours now while we go out, I usually leave the radio on and a chew for her.

Bobloblaw, Wiccaweys are a VERY good Collie rescue and theyhrehome across the country. Wiccaweys

Many Tears also rehomes across the country and is an all-breed rescue which has an awful lot of Collies and collie crosses - I've just seen some beauties on their website.

Heathlands are in North Herts and also rehome all breeds but in particular Collies, many of which they save from certain death in Irish pounds, where a dogs chances of survival are even worse than here in English pounds.

Flightattendant, you sound like a lovely person to own a dog, but I wouldn't recommend a Collie to you at all. They need a lot of exercise and mental stimulation and are likely to become bored, miserable and possibly even destructive or temperemental without a heck of a lot of human input and chances to run. There are LAODS of other breeds and crosses which would suit you though, I'm sure.

Funnily enough, and although you might say ARGH! or UGH!, a Greyhound which is small animal friendly or a Staffie might be ideal. Both are affectionate and sweet natured and do not require as much exercise as a Collie.

WRT going to Tesco, I'd suggest establishing crate training from the off and popping pooch in there with a Kong and fresh water if you're going to be out for just a short while. Whatever you do, don't leave your dog outside the shops - it's a recipe for disaster, just asking for some b888888dto steal your dog or mother to complain that he looked at her PFB and therefore must be put to sleep.

Oh, and PS, I want to live in your house! I adore pigs but I think my Landlord might have something to say about me adopting one, and I'd would love to have chickens, dear little things, but my evil killer cats would terrorise them!

Thank you Grin

I've spent the last hour cooing over all the gorgeous collies. Will rescue places mind placing a dog where there's another dog? Just wondering how they would assess that.

Thanks again.

It really depends on the dog, BobLoblaw. Some will not be particularly friendly with others and best placed as lone pets, some will positively crave a playmate.

I know that unless in exceptional cases, Many Tears only places their ex puppy farm breeding rescues into homes where there is another dog, as these are used to canine company and tend to be lost without it.

Other than that, it will be on a case by case basis.
