Kitten ill after vaccination

poppincandy · 05/08/2010 21:10

My two kittens had their first vaccination yesterday, one of them has been fine, the other has been sick, had bright yellow poos, and has eaten minimal amounts of food.

Is it likely that second vaccine will be worse/same/better?

What about annual booster? Is there any alternative or is there only one available?

TIA

You should call your vet and let them know how your kitten has reacted - unless it is fine and eating and pooing normally by today. Some cats have a mild reaction to injections, others aren't bothered.

I agree with ringing the vet to check.

Having said that my cat is ALWAYS under the weather when having a vaccination, for a couple of days she just mopes and doesn't eat.

To the point that, after about 10 years of vaccinating regularly, we've stopped (not that I'm recommending not vaccinating a kitten). She is currently 15 and still enjoying chasing leaves!

The most common symptoms are vaccination are like us mild flu like symptoms, achy joints and mild temperature.
Some cats have one bad reaction and never have a problem again and some have a problem every year.
There is some variation between brands of vaccine as to how many achy cats you get. In my personal experience (my practice administers around 1000 cat vaccines a year) Nobivac and Fevaxyn give more achy cats and purevax gives less achy cats, but purevax is a more expensive vaccine. Sometimes if a cat has a very bad reaction we give a dose of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory at the same time to help with the aches.

Thanks for the comments.

They had Nobivac FeLV and Noivac Forcat.

The good news is the cat who wasn't hungry yesterday pushed his brother out of the way at breakfast this morning to eat his as well. And the 'ill' cat is normally the one with the smaller appetite, his brother looked most indignant!

And all bodily functions are back to normal. From what you say Lizcat, I think I will complete the first course with Nobivac, but if he reacts after the second one, I think I will request the purevax for the annual booster and give that a go.
